Well... my heart stopped for a moment today. 😳💔

There was a sudden commotion on Monkey Mountain, and everyone scattered. Punch took off running in fear... and in the middle of all the chaos, one frightened baby macaque instinctively jumped onto Punch's back for safety. 🥹

It was such an innocent moment. Both little ones were scared.

The baby's mum quickly rushed over and took her baby back. Punch completely froze as she reached in, then once everything settled, he ran off again.

Poor little Punch must have been terrified—not only by the chaos, but by suddenly finding himself carrying another baby and then having the mother rush in. It all happened so fast.

Thankfully, everyone was okay, but my heart was in my mouth watching it unfold. ❤️🐵

Despite all the chaos and fear, he stayed calm, froze when he needed to, then moved away once it was safe. Every day, this brave little macaque teaches us something new. 🤎

In 2026, many baby Japanese macaques were born at Monkey Mountain. Most are healthy and growing well, but sadly some pregnancies ended in miscarriage and some babies did not survive.

The zoo says the monkey group is not overcrowded and has housed even more monkeys in the past. They usually use birth control (contraceptives) to limit births, but they chose not to in 2026 because some females had been on contraceptives for a long time, new staff wanted to observe the monkeys' natural behavior, and they believed more young monkeys would help Punch, who was hand-raised, integrate into the group. As a result, many babies were born this year, and the zoo says this was expected.
So they are actually doing what is best for Punch. 👍🥹

Night five, Chester walked across the kennel and lay down beside Wren. By morning she had eaten her first full meal. Chester is still available for adoption. Still showing up fo the ones nobody else can reach.
