🚨New preprint🚨, new #tweetprint!
Facial expressions reveal more than meets the eye! Our new study shows that even a mouse's face can reveal hidden cognitive processes. Turns out, facial expressions are more than just emotions...

It's been hard to find the words, but here goes: I have been given the wonderful opportunity to start as an assistant professor @CUAnschutz in July 2025. That also means opportunities for postdocs & grad students interested in models of motor circuits (https://t.co/O8vKy0hTGV).
I’d like to thank the co-authors, especially @zmainen and @arenart73 for their hard work and constant support! This work was made possible by @SCglobalbrain and @Neuro_CF [9/9]
Interestingly, the secondary motor cortex seems to play a key role in linking internal computations to facial expressions. This suggests a neural pathway for translating thought into observable motor output. [5/9]
However, this discovery comes with ethical considerations. If we can "read minds" through facial expressions in mice, what about humans? Open discussion about responsible use and data privacy is crucial as this technology advances. [8/9]
We used correlational (Neuropixels recording) and causal (optogenetic silencing) experiments to compare facial expressions and neural representations of cognitive variables. [4/9]
We used machine learning (FaceMap; thanks @computingnature & @marius10p) to analyze high-resolution video recordings of mice engaged in a foraging task. The result? [2/9]
