51% of Europeans say the EU impact on migration policy has been "negative" as opposed to just 16% who say it has been "positive." As a result, citizens demand stronger border controls.
I break down the numbers from the Euronews/Ipsos mega poll ⬇️

False positive+lack of accountability: Vedika has been criticised in the past for its potential misuse in mass surveillance and risk to citizens’ privacy a it tracks the lives of the state’s 30 million. But its efficacy in catching welfare frauds has not been investigated.

"They were challenged in 2012 and a high court judge said you must get rid of these in months, not years. Eleven years later they have still got them. And the answer to that has been: ‘Well they’re retained on a database that doesn’t have the bulk delete capability’." Amazing.
I'm super excited to host and moderate this event at the European Parliament tomorrow on the #AIAct and the Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (#FRIA).
Two stellar panels, including three Members of the @Europarl_EN (@brandobenifei, Karen Melchior and @kimvsparrentak), but also from the @EU_Commission (@PaulNemitz), from UN / OECD (Isabel Ebert), from Academia (@mantelero, Julia Straatman, Cathrine Bloch Veiberg) and Civil Society (@ka_iwanska, @fredericoosilva, @JChasserieau).
They are among the top experts on the topic. Some have already produced reports, toolkits or even books on FRIAs! Others developed it in practice (e.g., in the Netherlands).
This event is a follow-up to our Letter (signed by 150 University Professors) to the EU institutions for approving a solid FRIA in the AI Act! Thank you so much, @VincenzoTiani, for co-hosting this with me!!

A call to law enforcement community before the election season starts: “too often, political leaders build their popularity on spreading fear (…), warning against imaginary dangers. Those, like Europol, working against actual threats, have a duty not to feed such narratives.”
Search-and-rescue are not a driver of irregular migration. Mechanical metaphors oversimplify the complexity of migration determinants and drivers. https://t.co/BhqgOtfLZU
