I wouldn’t be surprised if main event competitors drop to play this instead.
While I think a side event like this is a good idea, when you do the math, it literally pays out more than the main event.
Main event total cash prizing = $23,250 (top 32 combined)
Side event total prizing at $5 per ticket = $23,430 (!!)
And we all know prize wall tickets will be worth WAY more than $5 each, so this is a very conservative estimate.
Not to mention, the prizing distribution is completely backwards:
- Top 128 in the side event (top 25% of 512) gets at least 18 packs, scaling up to a guaranteed booster box or more for Top 64+ (top 12.5%)
- In the main event, unless you make Top 32 (top ~2% of 1.5k+), you get literally NOTHING unless you win a best-of
Players who aren't confident in topping are naturally going to chase the most consistent prizing, which in this case is NOT the main event.
Is it too much to ask for the main event to get some prize wall tickets too? This feels pretty tone deaf, especially given all the concerns about terrible prizing at Houston.
