The Friend Request
At 2:17 a.m., Adam received a friend request from someone named Elias.
The strange thing?
Elias had no profile picture, no posts, and only one sentence in his bio:
"Thank you for saving my life in 2037."
Adam laughed.
It had to be a joke.
He accepted the request anyway.
Seconds later, a message appeared.
"You're late. You usually reply faster."
Adam frowned.
Adam: "Do I know you?"
The reply came instantly.
Elias: "Not yet. But you'll become my best friend."
Adam rolled his eyes.
Adam: "And how exactly does that happen?"
A typing bubble appeared.
Then:
"Tomorrow, don't take the usual bus to work."
Adam stared at the screen.
The next morning, curiosity got the better of him.
He skipped his usual bus.
An hour later, news broke that the bus had been involved in a major accident.
Adam felt cold.
He messaged Elias immediately.
Adam: "Who are you?"
Elias: "A friend."
Over the next few months, they spoke every day.
Elias somehow knew things before they happened.
He warned Adam about a failed investment.
He encouraged him to apply for a job he thought he'd never get.
He even reminded him to call his mother on a day she unexpectedly fell ill.
Every prediction came true.
Slowly, Adam stopped questioning it.
He just enjoyed having a friend who seemed to understand him better than anyone else.
Years passed.
Their friendship became the most important relationship in Adam's life.
Yet Adam never saw a photo.
Never heard a voice.
Never met him.
One night, Adam finally asked:
"Why won't you tell me who you are?"
The response took longer than usual.
Then came a single message:
"Because tomorrow is the day we meet."
The next morning, Adam received a call.
His younger brother had been in a terrible accident.
Adam rushed to the hospital.
Outside the emergency room sat a nervous teenager he had never seen before.
The boy looked up.
Their eyes met.
And Adam froze.
The face.
He knew that face.
It was the same face from dozens of dreams he'd had for years.
The teenager stood.
"Adam?"
"Yes."
The boy smiled weakly.
"I'm Elias."
Adam's heart pounded.
"How do you know me?"
The teenager glanced around to make sure no one was listening.
Then he whispered:
"Because twenty years from now, you're going to save my life."
Adam couldn't speak.
Elias explained everything.
In the future, Adam would become a scientist.
A breakthrough experiment would accidentally allow messages to be sent across time.
Elias, trapped in a disaster years later, would use that technology to contact the one person who could change his fate.
Adam.
The friend request.
The warnings.
The conversations.
They had all come from the future.
Tears filled Adam's eyes.
"So all this time..."
Elias smiled.
"You were my best friend before we even met."
Years later, when the disaster finally came, Adam remembered every message.
And when the moment arrived, he risked everything to save Elias.
As rescue workers pulled them to safety, Elias laughed.
"What?"
Elias shook his head.
"I just realized something."
"What?"
"We spent twenty years becoming best friends."
Adam smiled.
"No."
"We spent twenty years proving that real friendship doesn't care about time."
And for the first time in history, two best friends shook hands from opposite ends of the same story.
