Helen Farkas was a Holocaust Survivor and spent the last 50 years of her life speaking and educating younger generations about the #holocaust. #Shoah#education
Helen's Daughter #AmberAguirre is a world renound #ceramic artist. This weekend she has pieces at the LA art show. Proceeds of the artist's portion of sales are going to support brain cancer research at ucla.
Helen's granddaughter has been fighting brain cancer since 2020.
Amber Aguirre is Helen's daughter & much of her work is inspired by contemporary issues like racism, the police state & institutional inequity.
Just weeks before she passed away, Helen was still meeting new members of our family. I hope baby Zev keeps this moment in his heart somewhere as he grows up. Photo: January, 2018
In 1955 after surviving the #Holocaust in #Auschwitz, the Soviet invasion of Romania, and years as displaced persons Helen became a naturalized citizen of the USA. My family's gratitude for their difficult journey is a daily reminder of the power of the human spirit.
The world can not be a civilized place until we are compassionate enough to offer save haven to victims of genocide and war. Humanity, compassion, tolerance.
#Genocide doesn't happen without the complicit silence of others.

Art can be an effective way to teach students about the Holocaust & the impacts of hate. This Catholic school in California made charcoal drawings of local survivors through @FarkasMemorial, a program that could be replicated across educational spheres.

Helen's daughter Amber started collecting the family recipes before she passed away & her granddaughter made them into a #cookbook of #Hungarian comfort Food. These recipes are a blessing to us ❤️💜

My book detailing my family's journey from Auschwitz to the NBA was released a year ago today. Antisemitism, prejudice, and hatred in any form are such dangerous and destructive forces. We can't forget what's at stake when people aren't treated fairly.

Yesterday we lost another survivor. Helen's sister in law Illush was one of the last surviving family members who was a survivor. Illush survived the Holocaust & cancer and was a loving mother, grandmother & Auntie. We will miss you Illush Farkas 😢
#OnThisDay in 1943, the first transport of #Roma and Sinti people from Germany arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
It is estimated that as many as 23,000 Roma and Sinti were deported to Auschwitz, and that around 20,000 of them were murdered. #OTD
