Animal rescuer Zoe Rosenberg was just found guilty of felony conspiracy and three misdemeanors for her rescue of four chickens from Perdue's Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse. These charges carry a potential sentence of nearly 5 years in jail. Meanwhile, Petaluma Poultry faces no consequences for leaving sick animals to die or scalding animals alive. Zoe was represented by Chris Carraway, Staff Attorney at the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project (@AALDP_DU), and attorney Kevin Little. She will appeal her conviction, including several of the court’s rulings, such as its refusal to allow her to present a necessity defense and severe restrictions on what animal cruelty evidence the jury was allowed to see.

The jury then enters the courtroom again to indicate they have not yet elected a foreperson and that they have chosen to deliberate between 10am-3pm tomorrow.

With that, court is done. The case is now with the jury. The verdict could come any time (from an hour to multiple days). Watch this account closely to hear when we have a verdict.

To the enormous frustration and surprise of Hobson, Gnoss rules that Picklesimer’s statements are not proper to the conspiracy, affirming that they merely reported on the actions taking place and that Rosenberg’s conduct had already occurred before those statements were made. He added that the prosecution’s “attempt to place Picklesimer in front of a jury lacks foundation.” This, he said, makes the immunity issue moot.

Hobson became immensely angry (his face turned red, he scoffed, and grabbed his head with both hands, nodding multiple times) and stated that the court’s ruling was “greatly hindering the jury’s truth-finding.” Gnoss noticed Hobson’s outburst and added, “Okay, I’ve given my ruling, Mr. Hobson. You are welcome to put this in the record.”

BREAKING! In a legal brief that could have major impacts for animal rights, Harvard’s Brooks McCormick Jr. Animal Law & Policy Program Faculty Director and Law Professor Kristen Stilt has reaffirmed what we’ve known all along: animals are someones.

Many laws reference “someone.” For example, the necessity defense says you can break the law to save someone from a greater harm. It might seem obvious to many of us that an animal is someone, but corrupted prosecutors defending animal agriculture have tried to argue that they aren’t and that laws like the necessity defense can’t be used to defend the rescue of animals from abuse.

This new amicus brief not only reaffirms that animals are individuals, it reaffirms that they have the right to to be rescued from situations of neglect and cruelty. The brief has just been filed in the #SonomaRescueTrial for the #RightToRescue to show the judge that our legal team has the right to present the necessity defense to the jury.
