Tokyo has a combined sewer system, meaning sewage and rainwater use the same piping.

It is designed to discharge into rivers if it overflows due to heavy rains.

When extreme rains happen, the “bayside view” apartments turn into “poop side view.” This happened this week again, strong rains flushed the sewage into the water.

Wonder why the design choice? Japan surely could have found a better solution.

There were two fertility-related problems from which Rome suffered

One was that the equites (their gentry equivalent, roughly) and aristocrats refused to breed as the late Republic wore on, which starved the empire of Roman officers and administrators who were trained in the classic Roman manner of rule, life, and so on. The barbarians, slaves, freedmen, and so on who were eventually used by the emperors in an attempt to replace them never really did as well

The other issue was that the death of so many yeomen in the Punic Wars allowed the oligarchs to buy up the farms that formerly served as the basis of a virtuous Roman citiizen-soldiery, and flood the empire with imported slaves to replace them and work those farms, starving the republic and empire of recruits of the sort it once had

It doesn't really appear that peasant-level reproduction was much of an issue in the Roman Empire, but the combination of imported slaves and a leadership class that refused to reproduce once the centralization of power meant it no longer saw the point were huge issues
