We really need to do better with how we speak to people about their academic results. Someone graduates with a Third Class and the first response is, “You could have pushed it to a Second Class Lower.” Someone gets a 2:2 and people say, “You should have done better.”

Do we honestly think they didn’t know they could have done better? Do we think they didn’t try?

Not everyone has the same academic journey. Some people genuinely gave their best but, for one reason or another, couldn’t get the grades they hoped for. Some battled personal challenges, financial difficulties, family issues, mental pressure, or even lecturers who made an already difficult journey unnecessarily harder.

A result is not always a reflection of how hard someone tried. Sometimes, people fight battles we know nothing about.

So when someone finally crosses that finish line, especially after years of struggle, perhaps the first thing we should say is “Congratulations, you made it.” Encourage them. Celebrate them. Motivate them to do better from there.

There will always be room for improvement, but let’s not turn someone’s moment of achievement into a reminder of what they failed to achieve.

A Third Class is still a degree. A 2:2 is still a degree. The person wearing that result is bigger than the result itself. ❤️👏🏽
