@Roadman_Podcast My 1984 Bianchi Limited Racing Bike is my favorite road cycling bike. Spending an extra $10K to get maybe 0.5 mph faster when losing 10 lbs makes me 1 mph faster seems silly. Control the distance and power output, and brakes should be a last resort.

History rhyming at the Tour de France… This week Sepp Kuss nearly tumbled off the mountain on Stage 20, saved by a safety net. In 1951, yellow-jersey leader Wim van Est (first Dutchman in yellow) went full send on the Aubisque descent, plunged ~70 m into a ravine, and had to be hauled back up by his teammates linking a long chain of bicycle tubular tires into a rope. My hardest ride was pedaling up the Big Southern Butte in southern Idaho. Success after 7 attempts over 3 months. Learn each time, plan for the worst, and enjoy the ride. On Strava only 12 men and no women have ever pedaled up the Big Southern Butte. The KOM is almost an hour for 4.8 miles. Very rocky and rough road. Amazing 360 degree view from the top. You can see for miles and miles in each direction, and I hit snow once. My final attempt, I packed my Surly Pugsley with ten water bottles with iced green tea with honey, about 2000 calories of picnic foods, and made it a day trip. I got off the Big Southern Butte with my derailer broken and 6 hours total time to pedal 4.8 miles up and white nuckle 4.8 miles down. At the halfway point, people launch hang gliders... seriously!

@Roadman_Podcast Japanese Kerin track cycling body armor and helmets would help. The body armor is very subtle and allows professional Kerin racers to compete and retire in their 60s even with regular crashes at 40+ kph.

@Roadman_Podcast Back when bikes and riders were awesome. I'm very pro helmet and even advocate for Japanese Kerin track cycling body armor for high speed races like the TDF with high injury rates, but for epic slow climbs, near nudity is fine due to the slow speeds.
