On This Day — August 23, 1929

Nineteen years before the State of Israel was reborn, Arab mobs slaughtered Jews in Jerusalem.

After the imam’s sermon at Al-Aqsa, the cry “Attack the Jews” spread through the crowd. Mobs poured out of the mosque into the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. Armed with clubs, knives, sabres, and pitchforks, they beat, stabbed, and murdered. Seventeen Jews were killed that day.

The violence exploded outward.

In Hebron the next day, 67 Jews (mostly Orthodox men, women, and children) were slaughtered in two hours. British officer Raymond Cafferata later testified that he saw an Arab cutting off a Jewish child’s head with a sword. He shot the attacker. Moments later, he found an Arab policeman from Jaffa bending over a blood-covered Jewish woman with a dagger in his hand. Most Arab policemen refused to intervene or joined the rioters.

The atrocities were systematic and sadistic: eyes gouged out, breasts mutilated, rabbis castrated, yeshiva students’ throats slit one after another, girls and grandmothers gang-raped. A baker was bound and roasted alive. In one house the only object left intact was a portrait of Theodor Herzl, which the killers draped with a woman’s blood-soaked underwear.

60% of Jewish villages across British Mandate Palestine were attacked, six were completely wiped out. Safed was hit next. Eighteen more Jews murdered.

Final toll: 133 Jews killed, 339 wounded.

The ancient Jewish communities of Hebron and Safed were erased. Survivors were evacuated under British escort. Hebron remained Judenrein for decades.

This was a coordinated pogrom of murder, mutilation, and terror directed at Jews almost two decades before Israel’s independence.

IRELAND REJECTED THESE CHILDREN

These Jewish children fleeing Nazi persecution, arriving at Waterloo Station in London in February 1939, through the Kindertransport were rejected by Ireland.

In 1938, Irish Secretary Joseph Walshe wrote:

"There is no racial problem in this country, nor do we wish to import one".

Even after the horrors of the Holocaust became widely known, Ireland initially refused an application to bring just 100 Jewish orphan children who had survived the Holocaust into the country.

Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Gerry Boland said in 1946: "Any substantial increase in our Jewish population might give rise to an anti-Semitic problem."

Who DID Ireland take?

When they were ended Ireland launched operation Shamrock where they took in hundreds of German orphans of the Nazi Wermacht and other German orphans, as long as they were not Jewish.

The Irish government must reckon with this record.

That includes their slow ethnic cleansing of Krem Hatemanim- Hashiloach neighborhood in East Jerusalem by the 1920s.

Palestinians stole every single Jewish home in Hebron in 1929.

Palestinians stole every single Jewish home in the West Bank Etzion Bloc in 1948.

They attempted to do the same in Safed and countless other places in 1948 but thank God, the IDF prevented them.

On This Day — August 18, 1938

One Swiss police commander who was ordered to close the border to Jews chose defiance instead.

Paul Grüninger, commandant of the St. Gallen police on the Austrian frontier, quietly refused to obey.

From August-December 1938, he falsified documents, backdated entry permits, and looked the other way. He let 3,600 Jews fleeing Nazi Austria cross into Switzerland.

He knew exactly what it would cost him.
He did it anyway.

When Swiss authorities found out, they fired him, stripped him of his pension, and prosecuted him for breach of duty. He spent the rest of his life in poverty and official disgrace.

Only decades later, his heroism was finally acknowledged and he was honored as one of the Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.

3,600 people lived because Paul Grüninger chose to preserve life rather than follow orders.

On This Day, May 14–15, 1974: The Ma’alot Massacre — Palestinian Terrorists Slaughter 22 Israeli Schoolchildren on Independence Day

While Israelis were celebrating their country’s 26th Independence Day, three Palestinian terrorists from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine turned a school trip into a bloodbath.

Disguised in Israeli army uniforms, they infiltrated from Lebanon and began their rampage in the immigrant town of Ma’alot.

- They burst into the home of Fortuna and Yosef Cohen and murdered the entire family: the parents, their 4-year-old son Eliahu, and left their 5-year-old daughter Miriam wounded. Fortuna was seven months pregnant.

- They shot a sanitation worker after asking him for directions to the school.

- Then they stormed the Netiv Meir Elementary School, where 115 teenagers (mostly 15–16 years old from Safed) were sleeping after a field trip.

The terrorists took the children hostage, wired the building with explosives, and demanded the release of 23 imprisoned terrorists.

For over 12 hours the kids huddled on the floor in terror as the terrorists screamed threats and prepared to execute them.

When the elite Sayeret Matkal unit finally stormed the school, the terrorists sprayed the classroom with automatic gunfire and hurled grenades directly at the children.

22 children were slaughtered.
Another 3 adults died with them.
68 more were wounded.

This was not “resistance.”
This was the deliberate, sadistic targeting of Jewish children — on Israel’s Independence Day.

This is what the Palestinian “resistance” has always been.

Long before Hamas, long before October 7, 2023, Palestinian terror groups were slaughtering the most innocent among us: schoolkids, pregnant mothers, entire families. Ma’alot was not an outlier. It was the pattern — from the 1920s pogroms, through the Mufti’s Nazi alliance, through decades of plane hijackings, school bus ambushes, and suicide bombings.

They have never wanted a state beside Israel.

They have always wanted Israel gone — and Jewish children dead.

Stop calling it “resistance.”

Call it what it is: genocidal Jew-hatred with a new name.

The Jewish people survived the Holocaust.
We survived Ma’alot.
We survived October 7.
And we are still here — stronger than ever.

Am Yisrael Chai.

Never forget the children of Ma’alot. Never let anyone sanitize what “from the river to the sea” has always meant.
