St. Peter Claver was a Jesuit Missionary to the Kingdom of New Grenada (Colombia) at the beginning of 17th Century. He was horrified by the conditions and treatment of enslaved peoples from Africa.

During his life he ministered to the physical needs of Africans as they were unloaded from slave ships at Cartagena. He would continue to care for both physical and spiritual needs of the enslaved on plantations and advocate for their dignity and needs among his fellow Spaniards.
