My cousin told me two things when I got to the UK as a student. First was. Never do odd jobs; they are a trap. Second, sort out everything related to credit on time, as you are looking for something better to do.
That guy I met at Enfield 22 years ago, who was washing cars, did not have a credit card or a mortgage. He kept sending money home, but it kept losing value, thanks to inflation. Meanwhile, I know someone who has bought over 40 properties using the UK banking system (before the rules changed), and their properties have appreciated.
I have relatives who have lived abroad for decades and are still struggling with the mortgage for one property, and others who have a portfolio of assets, including businesses. The difference was how they started. Those who started with "struggle jobs" somehow maintain that siege mentality and think small.
Survival usually limits people's options, but I learned early that doing software testing gigs from the school library was a more sustainable option than carrying boxes at Tesco. If you have a university degree, you have to think bigger and better than those who do not.
Met someone like this recently and it left me genuinely unsettled. Her parents are Muslims but her grandma was a Christian who raised her mom as one. Her mom later converted to Islam.
She doesn’t firmly identify with either religion right now cos her mom told her to wait and see who she marries and basically align with him. She is perfectly willing to marry either a Christian or a Muslim.
The first thing that crossed my mind was, you genuinely do not understand what either religion is actually claiming. Cos if you did, how could you delegate the destiny of your own soul to a marriage prospect?
This is also why I no longer do the kumbaya “we all worship the same God” performance. I have Muslim friends and colleagues. I can sit with you, eat with you, genuinely enjoy your company, and still tell you plainly that I do not believe in the substance of what you are doing, that I think it is completely baseless and remarkably flawed.
I have always maintained that friendship and sharp disagreement are not mutually exclusive. Sports, religion, I will tell you directly. The exceptions for me are human rights and politics. Not this.
Christianity makes a claim that cannot be softened, Jesus is God. Not a prophet. Not a moral teacher. God. And He is the only path to salvation and eternal life. If that claim is true, Islam is not an alternative road to the same destination. It is a fabrication from the pit of hell.
Paul did not mince words; “even if an angel brings another gospel, let them be accursed.” Under Christianity, Islam is accursed. The being that appeared to Mohammed was not Gabriel. It was a demon, which is precisely what Mohammed himself believed in that cave before Khadijah talked him out of it.
You cannot sit with that honestly and remain passive. It is not an option.
Floating between the two is a serious sign of existential unseriousness. I will respect the committed Muslim far more than the one swimming with the tides, cos at least the committed Muslim has grasped that the stakes are real.
And tbh there is a weight to this. Accepting Jesus as Lord can mean confronting what that implies about your late Muslim grandmother or cousin, or best friend. That is not a small thing. But that weight is not an excuse to commit to nothing. You never find peace with that. You just find a softer way to dodge the question. Lukewarm is not neutral, far from it. It is a answer in and of itself. And frankly imo it is the worst one.
Prosperity cannot come by taxing Poverty
As I travel the world and meet leaders who have transformed their nations, one lesson is clear: lasting economic and social progress begins with national consensus. Transformative leaders—those who successfully unite their people around a shared vision—share a defining quality: honesty. Government must be transparent and truthful because citizens deserve nothing less from those who lead them. True leaders do not exploit their people to enrich themselves and a few cronies; they build trust, unity, and shared purpose - the foundation of sustainable progress.
It is against this standard of honest leadership that Nigeria’s current approach to taxation must be measured. If taxation is to function as a genuine social contract, it must be rooted in sincerity, fairness, and concern for the welfare of the people. Every tax policy should be clearly explained, including its impact on incomes and its expected contribution to national development. Without this transparency, taxation becomes a tool of confusion and burden rather than a mechanism for growth and development.
Nigeria must rethink taxation if it is serious about economic growth, national unity, and shared prosperity. The purpose of sound fiscal policy is not merely to raise revenue; it is to make the people wealthier so that the nation itself becomes stronger. Yet today, Nigerians are asked to pay taxes without clarity, explanation, or visible benefit.
The solution begins with empowering small and medium-sized enterprises in every community. When small businesses thrive, jobs are created, incomes rise, and the tax base expands naturally. You cannot tax your way out of poverty - you must produce your way out of it.
This makes the ongoing tax fraud saga particularly alarming. For the first time in Nigeria’s history, a tax law has reportedly been forged. The National Assembly itself has admitted that the version gazetted is not what was passed into law. Yet citizens are being asked to pay higher taxes under this manipulated framework—without transparency, without explanation, and without corresponding benefits.
There is no virtue in celebrating increased government revenue while the people grow poorer. Taxing poverty does not create wealth; it deepens hardship. Any tax system that makes citizens poorer violates the fundamental principles of good governance and sound fiscal policy.
Nigeria needs a fair, lawful, and people-centred tax system—one that supports production, rewards enterprise, protects the vulnerable, and restores trust between government and citizens. Only then can taxation become a true tool for unity, growth, and shared prosperity. -PO
