• And the National Association of Realtors' housing-affordability index fells to its lowest level since 2006.

This index gages median home prices, incomes and mortgage rates.
A mortgage is affordable if <25% of family income.
It's now 25.6%.
• The Fed is increasing interest rates to tackle 8.6% inflation. Banks send those increased costs to consumers by demanding more interest on mortgages.
The average 30-year mortgage is $420,000. The monthly payment at 5.3% is now $2,332.
$531 more than the start of 2022.
