Our focus is on ensuring a just and equitable global transition that advances Africa’s development priorities and strengthens climate resilience, grounded on nationally determined just transition pathways.

While the newly published ‘Kenya Guide for Strategic Engagement in Carbon Markets’ is a welcome step towards building transparent, high-integrity carbon markets in the country, environmental integrity must always be balanced with investor certainty, timely decision making, and the protection of existing investments and jobs. Any framework should remain responsive to Kenya’s priority sectors, such as agriculture, clean cooking and nature-based solutions, and ensure that carbon-budget restrictions do not constrain national development priorities, innovation and community-led action. Carbon markets must work for Kenya in advancing climate ambition while delivering tangible benefits for our people and economy. Demand for Kenya's carbon credits has been rising and needs to be maintained for continued investment on climate action. The CORSIA market and our signed arrangements with Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, and Norway require ambitious targets and high-integrity credits.

The Belem–Addis Vision opens a critical window to push for:
✅Locally led, gender-responsive Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) indicators
✅Real accountability on adaptation finance, not headline pledges
✅Knowledge sovereignty for Africa, rooted in lived experience, not imported metrics

If adaptation does not work for communities already living with climate impacts, it fails.

POWER UPDATE |

Kenyan President William Ruto has convened African leaders for a special high-level meeting on climate adaptation, signalling a push to reposition adaptation as a core pillar of Africa’s economic and political future.

At the centre of the discussion was the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme, framed as the continent’s flagship vehicle to scale adaptation while supporting jobs, food security, and public health. Leaders emphasised aligning adaptation with development priorities and macroeconomic stability, especially as climate risks intensify and fiscal space tightens.

The message from Nairobi was clear: adaptation is being elevated as a growth strategy, a stability mechanism, and a test of whether global finance can respond to Africa’s realities.

But the real question remains unresolved. Will adaptation finance arrive at the scale, speed, and concessional terms African countries need, or will ambition once again outpace delivery?
