This is an example of 'gain of opportunity' research funding.
If you bring pathgens from another continent to your US lab, grow it in lab cells to 100,000 times its concentration in its natural habitat, and then have a lab accident where someone gets infected and it goes into the community, you have created a risk of injury where none ever existed before.
To what end?
So you can publish a paper?
So you can develop countermeasures for a situation only you have created?
As they say in America, "your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins."
Maybe their right to study pathogens should end at the US border.
Should they agree to study the virus 'in situ' and do their lab work only locally and not in sunny San Diego?
Why is it that almost every time I stumble across someone paid by Bill Gates, it's a person who I have caught lying and bullshitting about public health?
Why is that?
