As Iran partially lifted its nationwide internet blackout, CBS News' @MargBrennan heard an American journalist's plea for help. Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh, who the U.S. says is wrongfully detained inside a notorious prison, is one of six Americans being held by Iran.
Freedom House welcomes President Trump’s commitment to raise the detention of Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri with President Xi during their upcoming meeting in Beijing. The Fred Hiatt Program to Free Political Prisoners recently adopted Pastor Jin’s case and we will continue fighting for his release until he is reunited with his family. #FreeThemAll

"... freedom for one must never mean forgetting the others still behind bars. Today, I fight for my RFE/RL colleagues still unjustly imprisoned – Nika Novak in Russia, Farid Mehralizada in Azerbaijan, and Reza Valizadeh in Iran. Today, I fight for every American still wrongfully detained."
@AlsuKurmasheva and @PashaButorin accept the @JamesFoleyFund World Press Freedom Award for their unwavering advocacy on behalf of journalists imprisoned by repressive regimes.
Reza Valizadeh is a former @RFERL journalist and U.S. citizen who has been wrongfully detained by the Iranian regime since September 2024. Since his arrest, Reza has faced increasingly brutal conditions and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on false charges in December 2024.
Reza’s lawyer, @FayheeRyan, describes the urgency of Reza’s wrongful detention:
“World Press Freedom Day reminds us that journalism is not a crime—and neither is telling the truth. Reza Valizadeh’s wrongful detention is part of a broader effort to silence independent voices, and it underscores why defending press freedom is inseparable from defending fundamental human rights. Reza’s continued detention serves no legitimate purpose. His release is an easy, humanitarian step on which the United States and Iran should be able to agree—and doing so could help open space for addressing the far more difficult issues now fueling broader conflict.”

Former Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, Roger Carstens, sat down with @jaketapper on @TheLeadCNN to discuss the six Americans currently held in Iran, including Reza, who has been declared wrongfully detained by the U.S. Department of State. The hostages must be a part of the U.S. negotiations with Iran. We cannot leave Americans behind #freerezav @cnn
.@FayheeRyan highlights the urgency of the case of Reza Valizadeh, a U.S. citizen and former @RFERL journalist who remains wrongfully detained in Iran. @freerezav#FreeReza
Reza Valizadeh, a journalist and longtime critic of the Iranian regime, is one of at least six Americans imprisoned in Iran. His lawyer, Ryan Fayhee, joins Elizabeth Vargas to explain how fighting for Valizadeh’s release could play a part in negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. @EVargasTV

Not only is Reza wrongfully detained, but he is being held in the notorious #EvinPrison which has been the target of air strikes on #Iran. @FayheeRyan spoke to @FoxNews about Reza’s wrongful detention
“With the news of the negotiations with Iran, we are hoping the cessation of strikes (if even brief) will open a window for the administration to prioritize the release of Americans being held in Evin prison,” @FayheeRyan spoke to @KassyAkiva at the @realDailyWire. Read here https://t.co/JWbQ3NIMnI
There are at least four Americans currently detained in Iran. Two of them — Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati — have been designated by the U.S. government as "wrongfully detained," and they're believed to be held inside Iran's notorious Evin Prison. @margbrennan has the latest.
Two Americans held captive in Iran, Reza Valizadeh and Kamran Hekmati, have been designated by the U.S. government as wrongfully detained, which the sister of an ex-Iran prisoner Neda Sharghi said “is very important.”
“Because you publicly now recognize these individuals as being used for their blue [U.S.] passport, and the United States government now has the sort of carte blanche to use all its resources to get them out,” she said. “These two individuals, Reza’s and Kamran’s families, do want their cases to be public.”
Roger Carstens said in his experience as former Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, “we were very cognizant of the connection between the nuclear talks and that of the prisoner talks.”
“Because if the nuclear talks suddenly fail very horribly, the prisoner talks could be pulled down with it. So it was very important for us to maybe just have a dotted line between the two issues, but not link them too tightly together,” he said.
In honor of U.S. Hostage & Wrongful Detainee Day on March 9th, we have been re-introducing you to the Americans in our family-led Bring Our Families Home Campaign who are currently wrongfully detained abroad. This is REZA VALIZADEH, wrongfully detained in #IRAN. Please learn about him. Post about him. Make sure he is not forgotten. #bringthemhome #freedomstartswithaname #freeRezaValizadeh @freerezav
Thank you @SecRubio. Former @RFERL journalist Reza Valizadeh is among the wrongfully detained Americans held by the Iranian regime. He must be released. @freerezav
“They should take great care with this military action to avoid any unfortunate collateral damage,” @FayheeRyan says of the U.S. and Israeli governments.
