“Drawing on findings from the 2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS), the data show that teenage pregnancy is not experienced equally across Uganda. Regions such as Bukedea and Busoga continue to record high prevalence rates, while districts like Kalangala have rates that are nearly double the national average.

When we examine the education differentials, a clear pattern emerges. Girls who have experienced teenage pregnancy are more likely to have had no formal education or to have completed only primary education. Education remains one of the strongest protective factors for girls.

The data also highlights the role of household deprivation. Girls growing up without access to basic services are more likely to experience early sexual debut, drop out of school, and face a higher risk of teenage pregnancy.

However, our biggest challenge is not the absence of data. Uganda has a wealth of evidence on teenage pregnancy and its drivers. The challenge lies in the fragmentation of that data across sectors and institutions. Misalignment between ministries, health facilities, and development partners often limits our ability to coordinate effective responses.

What we need now is greater alignment, stronger multisectoral coordination, and a shared understanding of the evidence. When all actors are working from the same data, we can better target interventions, allocate resources effectively, and accelerate progress in reducing teenage pregnancy,” shares Uwamahoro Sharon Mfite, a Senior Statistician in the Department of Demography and Social Statistics at @StatisticsUg.
