We desperately need to make federal elections less important. All the other answers are relative window dressing compared to that one because incentives win. If the outcome of a presidential election is perceived by some as existential, they'll act like it. It shouldn't be.
@Avik@NealMcCluskey@David_Boaz “The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite.”
-James Madison
...the founders designed an ingenious system of distributed government, where most important decisions can be made at the state/local levels.
This is the only thing which makes it possible to peaceably live in harmony with people with whom we strongly disagree.
#federalism
If we had a limited government no one would have to care that much who the president was because they wouldn't have so much power and we could mostly live our lives in peace.
The Federalist Papers are so detailed and so intellectually sound - I suspect several PhDs have been written on them. It is serious intellectual work to understand them - but when you do, you'll understand what "federalism" in the US means.
