We all signed up for a gritty espionage saga, just not one that goes THIS ruthlessly realistic in Part 1, where the full “soldier” mode of Ranveer Singh is basically on hold. He gets action, yes, but the one-man-army, magazine-emptying we were secretly craving? Those are clearly being saved for Part 2.

Half the film felt like we sneaked into an Akshaye Khanna solo act, and let’s be real, the man quietly stole the entire movie.

If you walked in expecting non-stop hero-wala action in THIS part, you’ll leave slightly starving. But if you’re ready for a cold, calculated, dialogue-driven spy chess match that leaves your stomach in knots, welcome to the game.

I'm not gonna say that ideas never get stolen in Hollywood. There are writers who get "inspired" by other people's ideas and then justify their actions after the fact by saying "execution is everything." But as far as the studios and big prod cos are concerned it is very very unlikely. Why? Because it's easier for them to buy a script and, if they like the concept enough, to hire someone to rewrite it. And it's a good thing they do because it's the bread and butter for a fair amount of writers in between their own projects.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: other than the occasional bidding war the screenplay is often the least expensive part of the process. But you know what's very expensive? Lawsuits. Outside legal counsel costs a ton of money. Lawyers charge by the hour. If you look at the how much writers get paid given the amount of time they spend polishing and perfecting their script sometimes they're barely making minimum wage. That's what happens when you love something so much you'll do it for free.

And if your thing does get stolen – or you think it was – it is very very hard to find a lawyer to represent you because those kinds of cases are almost impossible to prove without a clear paper trail. And the truth is there is a thing called the zeitgeist where different people come up with the same idea at the same time because we're all taking in a lot of the same information. It's not magic. It's just how brains work.

Sometimes you're seeing a similarity that is small enough to not be a dealbreaker. The classic example is THE SOPRANOS and ANALYZE THIS. Same basic concept, very different execution. So maybe execution IS everything.

When it happens it sucks. I feel your pain. Someone very wise once said something like if they're making a movie of your idea that's a good thing because it means you're on the right track. Maybe so but that's cold comfort. You just have to keep going or suck it up and put it away for a little while. But if you try to fight it you will lose. Call it an occupational hazard.

This is why we don't put all our eggs in one basket. If you think all you have is one big idea you either lack imagination or you're not trying hard enough. Neither one is good for a writing career. All this stuff about emailing your script to yourself or putting it in a self addressed stamped envelope gives you about the same amount of protection as hanging a dreamcatcher over your bed. Nor do you have to send it to the U.S. Library of Congress or obtain a copyright number. A screenplay is copyrighted the moment you write it. But you can't copyright an idea or a title unless it's a registered trademark like SUPERMAN.

Maybe you know all this but there's a lot of misinformation floating around and it's all a distraction. So stop reading this and get back to work. But if it turns out you're working on something called TRIASSIC LAND about dinosaurs who come back to life in the modern world I have some bad news for you
