Gisteren naar een leuk optreden van Ray Wilson geweest. Wilson was de laatste zanger van Genesis en had de onmogelijke taak om naast Peter Gabriel ook Phil Collins te vervangen. 4 jaar na het vertrek van Collins ging Genesis uit elkaar.

A LiDAR scan of the Amazon rainforest has uncovered evidence of complex ancient settlements hidden beneath the dense canopy.

LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that emits millions of laser pulses from an aircraft toward the ground and measures the time it takes for each pulse to return. This allows researchers to build highly detailed 3D models of the landscape, even through dense forest canopies.

In the Upano Valley of eastern Ecuador, near the Andes foothills, LiDAR surveys have uncovered an extensive network of ancient settlements hidden beneath rainforest vegetation. The findings include multiple urban centers linked by straight roadways, raised causeways, and carefully organized agricultural systems featuring terraces and drainage channels.

Based on regional chronology and associated evidence, these structures are dated to roughly 2,500 years ago, placing them in the Formative Period of Amazonian prehistory. The mapped region spans hundreds of square kilometers and contains thousands of rectangular earthen platforms, likely the foundations of houses, suggesting that the population may have reached tens of thousands at its peak.

The Discovery of a “Lost” Roman Color at Pompeii...

Inside the Pompeii Archaeological Park, researchers examining ancient Roman wall frescoes recently uncovered something extraordinary - evidence of a previously unidentified ancient pigment now being referred to as “Pompeian Gray.”

At first glance, it might seem surprising that archaeologists could still discover a new color inside one of the world’s most studied archaeological sites. But Pompeii continues to reveal details hidden for nearly 2,000 years beneath the ash of Mount Vesuvius. And color mattered enormously in the Roman world.

Roman interiors were not dull stone environments. Villas, baths, temples, and public buildings were filled with vivid wall paintings using carefully prepared mineral pigments. Reds, yellows, blues, blacks, and greens transformed architecture into immersive visual spaces rich with symbolism, luxury, and artistic sophistication. The identification of “Pompeian Gray” emerged through scientific analysis of fresco fragments during recent excavation and conservation work.

Researchers studying pigment composition discovered evidence of a distinct hue created through ancient artistic techniques and material mixtures not previously recognized as a separate Roman color category. That makes the discovery important not only artistically, but historically.

Every pigment reveals information about trade, chemistry, craftsmanship, and technological knowledge in the ancient world. Understanding how Romans created and applied colors helps scholars reconstruct how interiors originally appeared before centuries of fading and burial altered them.

And discoveries like this remind us of something remarkable... Pompeii is not a finished story. Even after generations of excavation, the city still contains hidden information waiting beneath layers of ash, collapsed walls, and microscopic traces of paint.

A civilization still teaching us how it saw the world— one color at a time.

The story behind Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” is one of the most moving in Rock History.

The song (and the entire album) was composed primarily by Roger Waters and David Gilmour in 1975, two years after the massive success of The Dark Side of the Moon. At that time, the band was on top of the world, but Roger Waters felt a great void. That void had a name: Syd Barrett, the founder and original creative genius of Pink Floyd.

Syd had been expelled from the band in 1968 due to his severe mental health issues, exacerbated by excessive LSD use. By 1975, he had been completely disconnected from public life for years. Waters wrote the lyrics with him in mind: a mix of nostalgia, guilt, and sadness over the absence of his old friend.

During the album’s recording at Abbey Road Studios, Syd Barrett showed up unexpectedly one day. No one recognized him at first. He had gained a lot of weight, shaved his head and eyebrows, and was carrying a plastic bag of candy. He was acting strangely and asked if he could play on the record. The band members were stunned and deeply moved. That encounter left a deep impression on everyone, especially Waters and Gilmour.

“Wish You Were Here” is literally a wish that Syd were there, enjoying the success he had helped create but could no longer be a part of.

The album Wish You Were Here was released in September 1975 and became one of Pink Floyd’s best-selling and most beloved albums. The title track remains a universal anthem about absence, lost friendship, and melancholy.

Today it is considered one of the greatest rock ballads of all time and a lasting tribute to Syd Barrett, who died in 2006.

The last King of Afghanistan, Mohammad Zahir Shah, around 1960... Zahir ruled the country for almost 4 decades from 1933-73. Remembered as a remarkably lenient king, he supposedly never signed a single warrant approving the execution of a citizen for political reasons during his reign.

Mohammad Zahir Shah came to power in 1933 at just 19 years old following the assassination of his father, beginning the longest period of relative political stability Afghanistan experienced during the 20th century. His reign lasted nearly forty years and spanned World War II, the early Cold War, and major modernization efforts across the country.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Afghanistan pursued a policy of neutrality between the Soviet Union and the United States, receiving economic and infrastructure aid from both superpowers. Roads, schools, dams, universities, and government institutions expanded significantly during this period, particularly in urban areas such as Kabul.

Zahir Shah’s government introduced a new constitution in 1964 that created a constitutional monarchy and allowed for limited parliamentary democracy, expanded civil rights, and greater political participation. Afghanistan during this era became known for comparatively relaxed social policies, including expanded educational opportunities for women and a growing urban middle class.

Zahir Shah was overthrown in a 1973 coup while receiving medical treatment in Italy. Afghanistan’s monarchy was abolished, and the country would soon enter decades of coups, foreign invasions, civil war, and political instability that dramatically reshaped the nation.
