Ivy League doubleheader for me this weekend: Brown at Penn on Friday night; Columbia at Yale on Saturday. My old friend, the retired referee Joe Forte used to say, "some nights you have to sleep fast."
The death of longtime Darmouth football coach Buddy Teevens is a tragedy. He was injured in a bicycle accident on March 16th and never recovered. He was only 66 and one of the best people I've ever known in sports. This is heartbreaking...
Today is the 30th anniversary of Jim Abbott's no-hitter in Yankee stadium. It is the only no-hitter I ever witnessed in person. What an extraordinary person he was and still is. Introduced myself to him in 1992 when he was with the Angels. He said he'd give me all the time I wanted to talk, 'as long as you tell me everything you know about Steffi Graf."
Was off twitter (X) last week when two people I truly looked up to, passed away. Tony Roberts told me once his goal was to live to 100-he made it to 95. Had the privilege of working with him doing hoops on radio. He was GREAT. Doug Feaver was one of my first Post mentors; superb reporter, always willing to help out kids like me. Very sad to lose them both.
Can someone please explain why Victor Wembanyama @vicw_32 needed to play in two summer league games? If everyone is so concerned about resting him for next summer's Olympics (a good idea) why in the world was he out there playing meaningless exhibition games?
They're the only two guys with multiple major wins during the @rogerfederer-@RafaelNadal-@DjokerNole era of dominance (three apiece) and they've both come back from major injuries, even though they have nothing left to prove, because they love to play and compete. Great to see.
This is the annual week of over-hyped non-events in sports. Home run derby; ESPY's; All-Star game; NBA Summer League; and the MLB draft - which ESPN & MLB .TV have tried to turn into an NFL-style hype fest. Difference is we'll have no idea who did well for several years.
Longest 4 days of the year for me finally end today. All-Star break used to be 3 days and there were always doubleheaders on Thursday -single admission- to make up for 1st half rainouts. Now it's 4 days and no doubleheaders in sight - but at least there's baseball again tonight.
@FeinsteinTweets @wjaymccarthy Jay and I were not on vacation together! But I didn’t get a chance to post from my read at USVI St John the other day. Finished it on the plane ride home; another great read from John and one day at a time David!
