It is with great pride that I join you today at the opening ceremony of this historic National Dialogue. This grand conference, which will bring together four thousand participants under one roof in the coming weeks, marks a historic opportunity for Ethiopia to obtain the “pen and parchment” with which to write a new chapter of its history by its own hand.

We are at a moment when we can break the cycle in Ethiopia’s political journey. A cycle that begins with inflammatory rhetoric and ends in violent action, and replace it with dialogue and discussion. I extend my sincere gratitude to the commissioners of the National Dialogue Commission for their invaluable contributions toward making this important undertaking possible.

This conference, which is founded on a bottom-up agenda-setting process involving hundreds of thousands of citizens, is a rare and remarkable event with immense significance in Ethiopia’s modern history. Through it, we have the opportunity to transform our challenges into opportunities and establish a lasting culture of peaceful transfers of power.

Today, we are planting good seeds that will benefit future generations, and we are ensuring that our children will enjoy the fruits they bear. As we participate in this dialogue, if we set aside our local interests and deliberate for the sake of Ethiopia, keeping our children and their future in mind, the outcome will be truly fruitful.

Together, let us cultivate hope, forgiveness, and peaceful coexistence. By resolving our differences through dialogue and reconciliation within our own country, let us safeguard Ethiopia from external interference. I call upon all participants to achieve a historic outcome; one that will benefit Ethiopia, serve as an example for Africa, and bring genuine peace and relief to all Ethiopians.

May Ethiopia forever prosper and be honored through the efforts of her children!

كان الاحتفال بيوم أفريقيا في الدوحة هذا العام احتفالاً يليق بقارة عظيمة وبعلاقات متينة ومتنامية بين دولة قطر والدول الأفريقية الصديقة.

ضم الاحتفال مسؤولين قطريين وسفراء أفارقة وأعضاء السلك الدبلوماسي وممثلي الإعلام، وحشد كبير من المدعويين ،في مشهد يعكس المكانة المتزايدة لأفريقيا في العالم، ومتانة الروابط مع قطر.

سعدت بأن أكون المتحدث الرئيسي في هذه المناسبة، لأن علاقتي بأفريقيا تمتد لعقود.
منذ رئاستي للجنة تصفية الاستعمار ومناهضة الفصل العنصري في الأمم المتحدة، ومروراً بزياراتي الواسعة لدول القارة أثناء حملتي لمنصب مدير عام اليونسكو عام 2017،
ارتبطت أفريقيا في وجداني بقيم الحرية والكرامة والتضحية.
وما زلت أحتفظ بامتنان عميق لدعم الدول الأفريقية وتصويتها لصالحي في الانتخابات ، ولما لقيته من ترحيب صادق وكرم أصيل في مختلف أنحاء القارة.

كنا نتحدث عن أفريقيا سابقاً كقارة الإمكانات، أما اليوم فهي قارة المستقبل. قارة شابة، غنية الموارد، متنوعة الثقافات، أصبحت شريكاً أساسياً في صياغة المستقبل العالمي، وأكثر قدرة على رسم أولوياتها واستكمال استقلالها الحقيقي عبر التنمية والتكامل.

وتتنامى علاقات قطر بالدول الأفريقية في هذا السياق على أسس الاحترام المتبادل والشراكة الصادقة، بهدف تحقيق التنمية والاستقرار المشترك.

أغادر هذا الاحتفال وفي قلبي إعجاب عميق بقارة لا تكف عن النهوض، وبشعوب لا تفقد الأمل. لقد منحتني أفريقيا صداقات عزيزة ودروساً خالدة، وأسباباً كثيرة للتفاؤل.

سيظل الاحتفاء بأفريقيا بالنسبة لي احتفاءً بالتاريخ، وبالإنسان، وبالمستقبل معاً.

2. This year’s election is different. Without needing any provocation, Ethiopians stood up for their country’s national interests and fulfilled their civic duty with remarkable commitment.

As more than 50 million Ethiopians (a voter turnout equal to the combined populations of 56 nations) cast their ballots today, several important realities about the country's political landscape deserve closer attention.

First, during the past few months, the ruling Prosperity Party has effectively campaigned not only for this election but for the next two cycles as well. The reason is quite apparent: its electoral case rests largely on both what it has already delivered & is on course to deliver.

Over the past five years, Ethiopia has recorded notable progress across many of the economic, governance, & strategic areas that matter most to ordinary citizens.

More than ten million children are now enrolled in government-sponsored school meal programs, who are also receiving free uniforms & school supplies. In a country where hunger once kept children out of classrooms or forced them to choose between learning & survival, this is not a marginal intervention. It touches the daily lives of millions of families. Besides this, in Addis Ababa alone, adult feeding centers provide free fresh meals to tens of thousands of low-income residents every day.

The urban corridor development program goes beyond beautification; it represents a broader effort to modernize cities through investments in housing, mobility, public spaces, safety, tourism, environmental management, & local economic activity.

These examples are only part of a much larger picture that includes developments in hydroelectric power, natural gas, fertilizer production, aviation, financial sector liberalization, food security, mining, tourism, healthcare, digitalization, & defense modernization, while confronting multiple armed insurgencies & carefully navigating volatile politico-security challenges.

From my perspective, Prime Minister Abiy's leadership demonstrates a clear understanding of Ethiopia's long-term strategic interests & a coherent effort to advance them.

Second, some long-standing assumptions about Ethiopian politics appear to be losing their hold.

The era of the default assumption that there is permanent enmity between society & the state is over. The assumption that the incumbent is inherently evil & must be removed, while the opposition is inherently righteous & entitled to state power, is over. The assumption that Ethiopia's political process needs a stamp of validation from foreign actors, particularly Western think tanks & NGOs, is also over.

The traditionally silent majority is the most rational force in the Ethiopian body politic, & it is no longer silent. It's becoming a more visible & decisive force. Political relevance can no longer be sustained through rhetoric alone; it increasingly depends on the ability to earn public trust & demonstrate results.

Third, for many citizens, voting is about more than selecting candidates. When voters stand in line across more than 52,000 polling stations despite boycott calls, intimidation, or security concerns, the act of voting itself becomes a powerful political statement. It is a mass rejection of extra-constitutional means to power & an explicit demand for the continuation of the reform processes towards concrete peace & development.

Finally, these elections may prove to be a defining moment in Ethiopia's political evolution. The next five years could provide an opportunity to consolidate a political settlement that has remained elusive for generations & to anchor it within the country's constitutional order.

Whether one agrees with every aspect of the current trajectory or not, the broader direction of Ethiopian politics is becoming increasingly clear: citizens are demanding results & the future will be shaped less by inherited narratives than by demonstrated performance.

The people of Ethiopia are an extraordinary and remarkable people. Other than the Creator, who can truly know and assess our people in their entirety? Through this year’s election, Ethiopians have once again shown the world that they are a people with a rich culture, deep patriotism, and the ability to safeguard the common good.

On this historic day:

* Citizens who were not intimidated by the cold and darkness of the night,
* Who were not deterred by the midday sun or sudden rain,
* Whom weddings, funerals, childbirth, and other social obligations did not prevent from participating,
* Who were not wearied by long lines,
* Whose physical disabilities did not stop them from casting their vote,
* Those whose illness and old age did not prevent from witnessing the hope of their country,
* Who were not exhausted by carrying their infant children; the future inheritors of the nation,
* And above all, whom the shouting and threats of enemies could not intimidate or stop;

The perseverance you demonstrated amid many challenges and hardships, against all odds, was a contribution made for democracy and for the very survival of the nation. For this, you deserve heartfelt gratitude.

It is a privilege to serve such a people. Therefore, may those who have been elected honor the trust placed in them and serve this people, with integrity and sincerity! A people who have paid a great price for the democratic system. May you be worthy of that responsibility.
