BREAKING: US diesel prices rise to a fresh record high of $6.49/gallon and have now hit new a record for 12-straight days.

This officially puts diesel prices up +100% from their low seen in January, just 9 months ago.

California continues to face the highest average diesel price, at a record $8.41/gallon, with its average gas price up to $6.14/gallon.

Rate hike expectations for October are also now at new highs.

BREAKING: France is running out of fuel. 11% of France's stations nationwide are now out of petrol or diesel, one in nine, with 16% of stations short in Grand Est, 15% in Pays de la Loire, 14% in Occitanie, and 13% in Centre-Val de Loire, per government figures published this morning.

The official count only registers a station as short if it has no petrol at all or no diesel at all, so a station out of one grade but holding another is not counted, meaning the real shortage is much larger. French diesel averages €2.406 a litre, about $10.45 a gallon.

Helsinki became Finland’s capital partly because Russia wanted the country’s center of power farther away from Sweden.

The city was founded by Sweden in 1550 as a trading town meant to compete with Tallinn across the Baltic. For a long time, though, Helsinki stayed fairly small. That changed after Finland came under Russian rule in 1809.

Turku was the main administrative center at the time, but it sat much closer to Sweden and still had strong ties to Stockholm. Russia wanted the capital farther east and closer to St. Petersburg, so in 1812 Emperor Alexander I moved it to Helsinki.

A major fire had damaged much of the city a few years earlier, which gave Helsinki room to rebuild. Walk through Senate Square today and you’re looking at part of that transformation. The Government Palace, Helsinki Cathedral and the university buildings helped give the city the look of a capital.

Suomenlinna tells another part of the story.

Sweden started building the fortress in 1748 to defend against Russia. Russia took control of it in 1808, and after Finland became independent, it eventually became Finnish. One fortress ended up passing through Swedish, Russian and Finnish hands.

Today, you can take a short ferry ride out and walk through old fortifications, tunnels and barracks while looking back toward Helsinki across the water.

And then there’s the sauna.

Sauna culture has been part of Finnish life for generations, and Helsinki still has plenty of public saunas. You can spend the morning around Senate Square, take the ferry to Suomenlinna, then finish the day at a neighborhood sauna or one along the waterfront.

That’s Helsinki in a nutshell. A city shaped by Sweden, rebuilt under Russia and eventually made fully its own by Finland.

At first, it can feel quiet, clean and modern. Once you know some of the history, you start noticing a lot more.

That’s the kind of place I write about in my newsletter. Places that are easy to enjoy on the surface, but get better once you know why they look and feel the way they do.
