Dear friends,

I’m non-verbal, and you might look at me and assume I’m “high-functioning,” stubborn, or unwilling to adapt. But let me share a truth that’s often unseen: my life as an autistic person is a constant act of compromise in a world designed for you.

Every day, I bend in ways you might never notice.
I mask my discomfort to keep you at ease.
I push through sensory chaos to exist in your spaces.
I pour my heart into gestures, sounds, writing, or AAC devices just to be heard—each moment a marathon of effort.

Too often, my voice is dismissed because it doesn’t come wrapped in spoken words. But trust me, I’m communicating, always. Through my hands, my eyes, my written words, I’m reaching out.

I adapt for you. Relentlessly.

But even the strongest spirits have limits. When I meltdown, it’s not me being “difficult” or “out of control.” It’s the moment my strength buckles under the weight of a world that demands I conform. It’s not defiance it’s the cost of carrying an ocean of effort you never see.

If you want to support me, don’t judge me by how well I fit into your world. Instead, ask:

How can I meet them where they are?
How can I make this space safer for their mind, body, and unique way of being?
How can I truly listen to their voice—spoken or unspoken—without judgment?

I’ve spent my life bending to fit your world. Imagine the beauty that could unfold if you took just one step toward mine.
