𝐀𝐒𝐏 𝐆𝐢𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐍𝐲𝐚𝐢𝐤𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐰𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭:
“Every single day, we at Katwe Police Station pick up the broken bodies of innocent Ugandans killed by mob justice. People who were wrongly accused, mistaken for thieves, or simply in the wrong place at the wrong time lynched, beaten, stoned, or burned alive by angry crowds before anyone could ask a single question.
I have stood beside grieving families as they mourn loved ones who will never come home. Fathers. Mothers. Sons. Daughters. Young people with dreams, old people who deserved respect. All gone in minutes of rage and suspicion.
Let me be very clear: 𝐍𝐨 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞. Every Ugandan, no matter how serious the suspicion, has a constitutional right to a fair hearing, to be presumed innocent until proven guilty, and to face justice through the law not through the streets.
If you see someone suspected of a crime, do not take the law into your own hands. Restrain them safely if possible, but hand them over immediately to the @PoliceUg . Let us investigate, gather evidence, and prosecute properly. That is our duty. That is the only way we protect the innocent and punish the guilty.
Mob justice is not justice. It is murder. And those who participate will also answer before the law.
Let us choose humanity. Let us choose the rule of law. Let us protect every life.
Report. Don’t lynch.
Hand over suspects to @PoliceUg.”
