The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. - Confucius
A&E is now like Narnia – there are 365 days of winter each year. Every day our corridors are full, and patients can wait for up to two days for a ward bed. However hard we work, if often feels like we are moving deckchairs on the NHS titanic.
We are failing our very patients that we are there to serve. They have paid their taxes all their life and they deserve better.
It’s not as simple as we need more resource. We do, but we also need to tackle the cause of so much of the morbidity and not just crisis manage when the patient’s health “tips over” and they come to A&E.
Of all the public health measures, tackling obesity is the key one. It’s not as simple as less calories, more exercise. The problem is the take-over of our diets by multinational food companies pushing ultra - processed food.
It is highly addictive, causes increased calorie intake (diet soda drinks increase obesity as much as full fat versions as they drive consumption of high fat/sugar food) and is the key cause of obesity. Even those, like me, who are fat but fit are at increased risks of illness.
In this week’s good health in today’s Mail, I look at these phenomena and misunderstood myth of “fat bit fit”. As a society it we are truly to tackle the crisis in healthcare, we need to tackle one of the main causes - ultra processed food.

Yes I’d like to pay less tax. But I would prefer ambulances that arrive, an NHS that works, roads not full of pot holes, state schools as good as private schools (with decent music and drama), open public toilets, decent public transport, no food banks - shall I go on?
