Doctors X-rayed pregnant women routinely in the 1950s to check which way round the baby was lying. Nobody thought it was dangerous.

Alice Stewart noticed childhood leukaemia rising sharply in Britain and set out to find why. She and her team interviewed the mothers of 1,400 children who had died of cancer, and 1,400 mothers whose children were alive, and asked them the same questions.

The pattern showed up in the first 35 pairs. Children who had died were about twice as likely to have been X-rayed in the womb, and a single scan at the dose used then appeared to be enough.

She published in 1956, and the response was outrage. Radiation was the technology of the future in the 1950s, and the claim that a low dose could cause cancer years later contradicted what the entire medical and nuclear establishment believed. Her methods were attacked. Her funding suffered. Doctors carried on X-raying pregnant women.

It took roughly 25 years for the medical world to come round. Pregnant women were still routinely X-rayed into the late 1970s. Two decades after she told them to stop. She retired in 1974 and did her most contested work afterwards, in her seventies, examining the health records of American nuclear weapons workers. Her findings there were unwelcome enough that the Department of Energy cut off her access to the data. She spent 14 years fighting them and testified before Congress, and in 1990 the records were opened to independent researchers.

She died in 2002, aged 95. The children who were never X-rayed have no idea who she was.

I do strangulation exams as part of my job. I have taken extensive training in strangulation and am qualified to testify as an expert in strangulation cases. The general public has no idea how bad this epidemic has become, how many women and girls this is happening to, or how dangerous this is.

I share facts about it sometimes like men who strangle women are twice as likely to be involved in a mass shooting or to kill a cop. Women who are strangled by their partners are 750% more likely to be killed by that partner.
I tell people that death by strangulation can occur in just minutes, under a minute if you hit the right nerve bundles that lead to certain arrhythmias. I also tell them that a woman can die from a strangulation event up to one year after the event and that a pregnant woman who has been strangled is at high risk of pregnancy loss for weeks after the strangulation event. Strangulation can lead to brain damage, physical disability, stroke, pregnancy loss, and death.
I tell people that there is no safe way to strangle and that nobody has the ability to consent to being murdered, and consent is not an excuse for murder, if someone were to consent to this it is incumbent on the would be murderer to use self discipline and restraint, because a person’s “consent” to being murdered is not going to be recognized by any court as a legitimate excuse. Nobody can consent to being killed.
When I tell people these things, a very few are appreciative, mostly women, some are interested, men and women, and some attack me for being stupid and not knowing what I am talking about, apparently days of professional training and hundreds of exams performed mean nothing to the “experts” of X. Those that attack are mostly men. Some argue with me about dumb things, like my insistence to call strangulation what it is. Strangulation is not choking, choking is not strangulation, these are two different types of ways to block an airway but they are not the same. That is what people argue with me about the most. They insist on using incorrect language and then provide me with a weak google link picture of a choke hold to try to prove it’s the same.
So then it becomes me explaining that a choke hold is called a chokehold but it is not choking it is strangulation and that blows their minds and I am met with silence or swears.
This is an incredibly important issue that needs to be discussed but it is very contentious and the defenders of strangulation can turn into rabid dogs very quickly.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate the effort you are taking here, that you are raising awareness and that you are using accurate language and data. It’s really important that we change the narrative around this subject.

I would like to share this resource with you, I’m not sure if you are aware of them or not, but this was the group that did my training on strangulation. They go all over the US teaching medical professionals and law enforcement about strangulation and they have a ton of information and resources on their website. You might find them useful.

Researchers recorded 31 conversations between men and women in 1975 and counted the interruptions. There were 48 of them. Men accounted for 47.

The finding has been replicated for fifty years with better methods and bigger samples, and it has never gone away.

Researchers at George Washington University found in 2014 that men were 33 percent more likely to interrupt when talking to a woman than when talking to another man. The behaviour changes depending on who is speaking.

Then somebody checked whether status protects you. A team went through fifteen years of transcripts from the highest court in the United States and counted every interruption during oral argument. Women made up about a quarter of the bench. They were on the receiving end of 32 percent of the interruptions and responsible for 4 percent.

Lawyers arguing before that court are not permitted to interrupt a judge at all. Male lawyers accounted for around 10 percent of the interruptions anyway. Female lawyers accounted for approximately none.

There is a myth this kills on the way past. Women get interrupted more despite talking less, because across this whole literature men talk more and are interrupted less.

The women on that bench had a habit of opening with a polite phrase, asking permission before asking their question. Researchers found that dropping the politeness reduced the interruptions without stopping them.

If you are a man who has read this far and thought about your own meetings, that is the useful part. Almost nobody thinks they are the one doing it. Forty-seven out of forty-eight of them were.
