FEDERAL MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
PRESS RELEASE
1st June, 2026
FG APPROVES STRICT GUIDELINES ON HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREES TO RESTORE CREDIBILITY OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES
The Federal Government has approved comprehensive Guidelines for the Award and Use of Honorary Doctorate Degrees in Nigeria to strengthen academic integrity, transparency, and the credibility of the university system.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, disclosed that the policy addresses concerns over abuse, commercialization, and misuse of honorary awards. The guidelines were developed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and approved by the Federal Executive Council.
The framework sets clear rules on eligibility, nomination, approval, conferment, usage, and revocation of honorary doctorate degrees. It restricts eligibility to approved universities that have graduated their first PhD set and limits awards to a maximum of three per convocation.
All honorary degrees must carry the designation “Honoris Causa,” and recipients are prohibited from using the title “Dr.” The guidelines also establish oversight mechanisms, including a Special Fraud Unit under the NUC to monitor compliance.
Universities are required to publish recipients’ names, provide orientation to awardees, and implement revocation procedures where necessary.
The Federal Government directed strict compliance, warning that violations may attract sanctions including suspension of accreditation activities and dissolution of governing councils.

@SD4855882813850@zoomafrika1 The mastermind of Thomas Sankara's assassination, his childhood friend & comrade-at-arms, Blaise Compaore - a complete scum - lives now in infamy and will be forever remembered for his treachery & this unpardonable act!
Ongoing (xenophobia) violence in South Africa is most unfortunate! There are specific options before the Nigerian government, & AU. But, make no mistake about this, the ANC government in SA is culpable, and it must be called to account!
Global military expenditure just hit $2.7 trillion - in a single year.
According to @UN estimates, ending world hunger by 2030 would require $93 billion annually.
That means we spend almost 30 times more every year on killing each other than on making sure everyone eats.
Numbers don't lie. Our priorities do.
Without doubt, Taiwo Oyedele's appointment as Minister of State, Finance, is one of the best, made by President Tinubu. Oyedele is deeply cerebral, visionary & serious minded. He brings a lot of passion to the job & should make a difference in overall governance quality terms.
Hearty congratulations to Maj Gen AA Fayemiwo (rtd) mni, and the other retiring senior officers, on your formal disengagement. Thanks for your service, officer and gentleman!
PHOTO NEWS: COAS GRACES REGIMENTAL DINNER NIGHT IN HONOUR OF PAST CORPS COMMANDERS OF THE NIGERIAN ARMY FINANCE CORPS
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, (Nigerian Army Medal), graced the Regimental Dinner Night organised in honour of past Corps Commanders and retired senior officers of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps.
The stately event, held on Thursday 5 February 2026 at the Headquarters Command Finance Office Parade Ground, Arakan Cantonment Apapa, Lagos, was steeped in military tradition and pageantry, reflecting the customs, heritage and esprit de corps of the Nigerian Army. The occasion provided an avenue to honour distinguished service, reinforce regimental bonds and celebrate the enduring legacy of leadership within the Nigerian Army Finance Corps.
Dignitaries in attendance included the immediate past Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army), Major General AA Fayemiwo; Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Army Headquarters; Formation Commanders; the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Finance and Accounts; as well as retired senior officers of the Nigerian Army Finance Corps.
On President Trump's "Board of Peace" on Palestine, no Black folk was found worthy to be included; not from Africa, not from the the African Diaspora! That's vintage Trump - very inclusive in outlook!!
@antonioguterres@UN Diplomatese, at its best! In Yoruba, it's called, "sòtun sòsì, má ba bìkan jé"! - i.e., dexterity at beating a middle course, thereby causing offence to neither of the 2 sides involved in a conflict! Unclear though, if this constitutes an effective conflict resolution mechanism.
Exciting presentation on Venezuela! What remains to be added are Trump's personal desire to project strength & give the impression of being tougher than his predecessors, whom he loves to put down as weak; & the faux pas of wanting to 'run' Venezuela!

@BashirAhmaad PMB sought d presidency most frantically without a hoot of an idea what to do with it. He threatened fire & brimstone (dog/baboon swimming in blood) & laid the basis for much of d insecurity roiling Nigeria now. Provincial & intellectually immobile, he practically ruined d city!
Significantly, Trump is stepping aright on his handling of Hamas's carefully constructed response to his peace plan. In diplomacy & conflict resolution, smart folks ignore what comes across as negative & disappointing, to focus on, & emphasize the positive & promising angle.
It's quite exciting that this wonderful student loan initiative has fully taken off, and is succeeding! We had advocated for a program like this for many years! Every smart student in need of support to see them through their education should take advantage of this.
This presidential charge is particularly apposite & at the right time! With a little more responsible usage of d humongous amounts going to d States from d Federation Account, a lot of dev't mileage could be gotten. We canvassed this in our NPSA conference presentation, July 15.
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
President Tinubu To Governors: Invest More In Poverty Eradication, Power, Agriculture
*As NEC endorses ward development programme to hasten social protection at grassroots*
*Orders transfer of Surveyor-General's office to presidency for seamless execution of legacy projects*
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday charged state governors to prioritise the welfare of Nigerians by investing more in their future, putting more money in rural electrification, agricultural mechanisation, poverty eradication and infrastructure.
President Tinubu spoke on Thursday in an address at a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC).
The council endorsed a new ward-based development strategy, Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme (RHWDP), to actualise double-digit economic growth through direct intervention in Nigeria's 8,809 administrative wards across all 36 states.
President Tinubu's charge to the governors followed a presentation on the RHWDP by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu, at the 150th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the State House Council Chambers, Abuja.
The President implored the governors to do more to positively impact the lives of Nigerians in the grassroots, saying, “I want to appeal to you; let us change the story of our people in the rural areas.
"The economy is working. We are on the path of recovery, but we need to stimulate growth in the rural areas. We know the situation in the rural areas, let us collaborate and do what will benefit the people," he added.
President Tinubu urged state governors to collaborate with the Federal Government to drive economic development in rural areas across the country. "We have to embrace mechanisation in agriculture, fight insecurity, and improve school enrolment through school feeding," the President said.
Accordingly, he directed NEC to set up a committee to enhance the actualisation of legacy projects, especially the Lagos-Calabar and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highways.
He also ordered the transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation to the presidency to enhance the seamless actualisation of his administration's legacy projects across the country.
NEC endorsed the new ward-based development strategy, RHWDP, aimed at achieving double-digit economic growth through direct intervention in Nigeria's 8,809 administrative wards across all 36 states.
RHWDP, which was presented by Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, during the council's 150th meeting, received full endorsement as a collaborative undertaking between federal, state and local governments.
It is anchored on President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to achieve a $1 trillion economy by 2030, requiring a growth rate of 15%, while the current rate sits below 4%.
The RHWDP draws its legal framework from the 1999 Constitution and the Fifth Alteration Act, which mandates state policy toward ensuring food security and improved production methods.
Its key targets include sustainable support for economic activities with minimum thresholds of 1,000 economically active individuals for smaller wards and 2,000 for larger ones.
A National Steering Committee comprising representatives from all six geopolitical zones will oversee implementation, with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning as secretariat.
Council also directed the strengthening of State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) across all 36 states of the federation and asked the Federal Ministry of Finance to release emergency funds to address impending flood effects.
The council's resolution came following a presentation by Mrs. Zubaida Umar, Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency.
