The EU may get a new solidarity mechanism.
Solidarity with people in search of safety is still lacking.
Read our analysis of how the Pact will trap people on the EU's external border and hinders access to asylum:

The Migration Pact has not yet taken effect but EU governments are already proposing further deteriorations of people's rights.
The Pact is bad news. Its compromises are not the end stage. They are a launch pad for a further crackdown on refugees.

Three people died, twenty-five people still missing in a shipwreck off Samos.
Europe cannot go on like this.
The price of Europe's misplaced fear cannot be the lives of people in search of safety.
We need a more humane asylum system with more safe routes.
We need them now.

Four years ago, the Moria refugee camp burned down. Politicians promised "No more Morias".
Now, bad reception conditions are copied throughout Europe.
In the @volkskrant we argue that four years after Moria, Lesvos has been forgotten [🇳🇱].

Four years ago, the Moria Refugee Camp was reduced to ashes.
Today, the systemic failures persist.
Fenix reaffirms its commitment to working towards a future where the promise of "No more Morias" is not an empty one, but a reality.

In the @EP_Justice, @LeijtensFrontex says that the shift of funds away from @Frontex leads to an "almost dangerous situation".
Dangerous for whom exactly? For the people looking for safety Frontex has been blocking access to asylum for? For the people deported by Frontex?
Today @EP_Justice speaks with @Frontex director @LeijtensFrontex. When Leijtens took office, he promised "zero deaths" at the border.
Last week, @ABoatReport showed Frontex covering up involvement in actions hindering access to asylum on Lesvos.
Time to live up to the promise.
The Mediterranean is a graveyard and the most vulnerable refugees cannot reach the EU to find protection here.
Safe routes are needed but the Migration Pact does too little to create those.

@Refugees' @FilippoGrandi proposes to process asylum procedures outside of the EU.
It is extremely worrying that UNHCR is going along with the EU's externalisation and return narrative.
Refugees' access to the territory is a protected right.

The Greek authorities should take note of these findings while completing the new Vastria CCAC on Lesvos.
The camp should:
❌ not deprive people of their liberty
❌ not put people in detention
❌ not isolate people from the wider community
The @Amnesty report on the Closed Controlled Access Centre of Samos calls the centre a “dystopian nightmare” that keeps people in unlawful detention.
The EU, which funds the CCACs, cannot let the conditions in Greek camps be the blueprint for Europe.

We wish all the members of the new @EP_Justice a lot of courage and wisdom in the coming five years.
Let's work to:
✅ Protect the right to asylum
✅ Improve reception conditions
✅ Open safe and regular migration pathways
Today the @EP_Justice will debate the implementation of the EU Migration Pact with @YlvaJohansson for the first time in the new term.
On Lesvos, we already see that the Pact's implementation will lead to widescale human rights violations:
