Today’s event revealing the name of our new community centre was an incredible success! It has been given a Cree name that was created in ceremony: ‘okimaw peyesew kamik.’ In English this translates to ‘King Thunderbird Centre.’

Not more, but better.
Our new downtown Community Centre, coming late-2023, allows us to provide our existing 40+ programs and services in a better, more intentional way.

The situation has gotten so bad at the Stollery, @shazmamithani says the hospital has opened an overflow ER in clinic spaces, "essentially, running two parallel emergency departments at the same time."

I see we are back to scapegoating overdose as a reason to not take action on COVID-19. If this is such a concern for Alberta's government, why have they closed several life-saving services that prevent these deaths over the past 2 years? #ableg
My first thread. Hold tight. 1/13
Yesterday, #Alberta's latest opiate death numbers were released. They are sobering.
This graph shows opiate poisoning deaths in 2021 are averaging nearly three times (2.9x) higher than two years ago.
In an attempt to curb overdose deaths, New York City will open the nation’s first authorized supervised injection sites for drug users. They will provide clean needles, administer naloxone to reverse overdoses and provide options for addiction treatment.

NEW: Updated data from Alberta Health shows another 253 Albertans died from accidental drug poisonings in June and July. This brings the death toll to 898 in the first seven months of 2021 – a 22 per cent increase compared to last year. #abhealth#abpoli
If the gov’t is building a new SCS, I hope it will incorporate supervised inhalation. Prevalence of smoking fentanyl + other drugs seems to be on the rise in #yeg, with many anecdotal reports of ppl who smoke drugs overdosing outside of SCS (which only accommodate injection).
Alberta is looking at new supervised consumption sites in #yeg, first in the Strathcona area. Associate Min. of Mental Health and Addictions' office said today it's "clear from Edmonton’s overdose challenges there is an unmet need south of the river." #ableg#abhealth More:
The province used to regularly publish neighbourhood level OD data. It would be nice to see that released again to be able to pinpoint areas of #yeg with the greatest SCS need.
Adarsh Badesha @adarsh_badesha & Simran Dhillon, Founders of Fentagone, were my #tellingitlikeitis guests today. It is inspiring to talk with these two young entrepreneurs. Taking on addiction and trying to make the world a better place should be a goal for all of us. THANK YOU!!
Adarsh Badesha & Simran Dhillon, Founders of Fentagone, are my #tellingitlikeitis guests Sept.22, 9.30am MST. FentaGone’s mission is to reduce the amount of fentanyl-related overdoses occurring on the street level.

If there was ever a time to reopen the closed SCS’s, reopen injectable opioid agonist treatment clinics, and implement emergency safe supply programs it would be now. Preventable drug poisonings are the other crisis exhausting acute care resources in Alberta right now. #ableg
