Today I presented about our #environmentaljustice & proactive #communityengagement work at @PennsylvaniaDEP. We are improving relationships with communities living in EJ Areas & permitting efficiency. Also shared how proactive engagement is a tool for climate change preparedness.
The premise of the conference has been how we should think about resiliency and prepaderness not only from a physical infrastructure perspective, but from a social-centered, community-based perspective.
It’s Primary Day, Pennsylvania — and polls are officially open.
If you haven’t already, make your voice heard and cast your ballot before 8 PM tonight.
Head to https://t.co/S94j7irJY8 for more information — now, let’s go win this.
Heat is not experienced equally by everyone.
Walk Philly on a summer afternoon: one neighborhood is sweltering; another is cooler…sometimes by as much as 22 degrees. (That’s a real stat)
And while climate change continues to make Pennsylvania hotter, it will worsen that inequity.
Everyone has a right to stay cool. Yet many neighborhoods lack shade, green space, modern homes, or safe cooling centers. And the people most exposed to extreme heat are often the least protected.
Who’s impacted by heat?
🌳 Farmworkers, construction crews, road workers, delivery drivers, landscapers, postal workers.
💨 People with asthma, COPD, or heart disease.
🛝 Older adults, pregnant people, and children playing outdoors.
The list goes on.
During Pennsylvania’s Heat Safety Week, learn the risks, spot the signs…check on your people. Support those who feel the heat the most.
...
With help from a DEP Growing Greener Grant, the Allegheny County Conservation District and Findlay Township teamed up to turn two grass areas at the Findlay Township Activity Center into new rain gardens and a bioswale (a long, shallow ditch filled with plants that love water).
These gardens help catch and clean stormwater before it reaches Montour Run. Together, they can soak up more than 37,000 gallons of runoff! They also give visitors and Montour Trail users a close up look at green, clean water solutions.
One big lesson learned: planting at the right time really matters. Waiting for the best planting conditions helps the plants stay healthy and strong.
Thank you to all the partners who made this project happen: Allegheny County Conservation District, Findlay Township, Montour Run Watershed Association, and the Montour Trail Association.

WOW! Here it is!
The Shapiro Administration just announced they're investing $267 MILLION to reduce air pollution, cut energy costs, create jobs, and combat greenhouse gas emissions across PA.
The 31 medium- and large-scale RISE PA grant awardees are expected to save more than 1.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents within the first year of implementation, and more than $3 million annually in energy costs. 👏

UPDATE: We’re putting a historic grant to good use here in Pennsylvania.
The RISE PA program is going to strengthen our manufacturing sector, lower energy costs, create more good-paying jobs, AND reduce our impact on the environment.
We have real change happening here at Pennsylvania DEP. Earlier this year, our Environmental Justice team wrapped up a nine-year journey to make its Environmental Justice Policy stronger and more fair for everyone.
They talked with communities, listened to what people had to share, and even made some changes inside at DEP.
Check out the story and see why this new policy is a game‑changer. 👀

Last week, we joined the @pafishandboat for an Earth Week trout‑stocking event in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County.
The team added fresh trout to Children's Lake which flows into the nearby creek. Recent restoration work, which was funded through a Growing Greener Plus Grant, is helping the water stay clean and healthy, and providing better habitats and environments for fish! 🐟
These improvements enable the creek to better support the trout population, as well as improve overall water quality within the watershed.
Hundreds of thousands of visitors descended on Pittsburgh for the @NFLDraft this weekend — and it was incredible. I’m grateful to our teams at @PAStatePolice, @PennDOTNews, @DCNRnews, and local officials who worked around the clock to keep people safe and ensure this event was a big success. Fans from across the country experienced all that Pittsburgh had to offer. They ate at our world-class restaurants, stayed in our hotels, hung out at our bars, and poured real dollars into this city. Oh, and we set a couple of attendance records, too. So to fans from across the country who experienced the Steel City for the first time: Pennsylvania is ready to welcome you back any time.
