Slightly influencing Shem to publish Legacy of Yu may be my single greatest contribution to the board game industry that I ever achieve. A life well spent.
🔎Design Insight🔍
Legacy of Yu originally began as an attempt by Shem to develop a new version of Shipwrights of the North Sea ⚓. While the solo mode showed promise, the multiplayer aspect fell flat, retaining issues from the original game. He shelved the project but kept working on some of the mechanics he enjoyed, such as tucking cards for income and placing workers on the board for actions, to then reclaim them each round.
Shem started to consider designing a solo-only game 👤. He looked for a fitting theme and eventually decided on the story of Yu the Great. The row of canal cards was implemented early, and the townsfolk and outsider cards were inspired by Paladins, but in this game shared the same space. The game itself came together quite quickly.
Shem took it to a design retreat in New Zealand in late 2020. He already liked the game, but saw its true potential when he watched Paul from Badgers From Mars (Regicide) play it at the retreat. Seeing the emotional rollercoaster that the game took Paul on, convinced Shem that the game had something special. 💫
It was during that retreat that Shem had the idea to expand the core game into a campaign—one that would be replayable. Inspired by experiences with legacy games like Pandemic Legacy, he wanted a campaign that could retain its hidden and unpredictable nature, even through multiple plays.
Obviously there was a lot of testing and tweaking, but this is the story of how Legacy of Yu came to be! 🤝

@DevRelCallum Sharing is caring! Hit him up, he's great. Know the struggle of finding artists to work with, we're on the hunt at the moment also. If you find anyone who'd be good for a DnD kids book, send em my way :D
@DevRelCallum Have worked with Sketch Goblin aka DJ the artist in your second image and can thoroughly recommend him, awesome dude, just don’t steal him in the next few months he’s busy finishing our game!
@meampongan@midi2304@BadgersMars We get you too, we've been trying hard to keep the price low while making a game we're proud of, but realise that using the quality components we wanted does make it slightly more expensive. And that's ignoring the sheer quantity of stuff in the box.
