A house that starts as a garage.

Completed in 2022 by BIG in Aalborg, Denmark, Villa Gug was designed around a private car collection — not hidden underground, but built into the architecture itself.

The 840-square-meter home curves around a central garden, gradually shifting from showroom and garage to kitchen, living spaces, bedrooms, and terrace.

The Ugric languages have one of the most unusual distributions of any language branch. Hungarian is spoken in Central Europe, while its closest relatives, Khanty and Mansi, are spoken more than 3,000 km away in western Siberia. This striking separation is the result of thousands of years of migration. After the Ugric branch split from the rest of the Uralic family around 2000–1500 BCE, the ancestors of the Khanty and Mansi remained in western Siberia, while the ancestors of the Hungarians gradually moved southwest across the Eurasian Steppe. They eventually entered and settled in the Carpathian Basin in 895–896 CE, where Hungarian has remained ever since. Over more than two millennia, geographic isolation and contact with different neighboring peoples caused these languages to evolve independently, making them closely related but no longer mutually intelligible.

A remarkable historical episode occurred in 1235–1236 CE, when the Hungarian Dominican friar Julian set out to find the Eastern Hungarians (Magna Hungaria), a group believed to have remained behind near the Volga–Ural region during the westward migration. According to his account, he successfully located them in what is now thought to be Bashkortostan or nearby areas of Russia. Julian reported that he was able to communicate with them without an interpreter, suggesting that despite roughly 300–400 years of separation, their speech was still mutually intelligible with medieval Hungarian. During his journey, he also learned of the advancing Mongol armies and returned to Hungary with one of Europe's earliest warnings of the impending invasion. When he attempted to revisit the region in 1237, the Mongol conquest had already devastated the area, and the Eastern Hungarians disappeared from the historical record, most likely through death, displacement, or assimilation into neighboring populations. This episode remains one of the strongest historical clues linking the medieval Hungarian migration to its eastern homeland.
