In 1993 I made my first trip to the Ferrari Factory with Gianluigi Longinotti Buitoni, Gianni Nunnari and made my first attempt to absorb and understand some of the unique vibe of the close but incredibly rich culture of Modena. With me at the factory is Giacomo Mattioli, behind one of Ferrari’s beautiful V12 engine blocks - cast in sand by human hands - that at one and the same time is both sculpture and incredibly engineered to speed you through the world.

“One, because Ferrari is Ferrari. And envisioning when they arrive at the factory, seeing some of the history. The racing was nuts back then. The cars were so dangerous. Could I look at it and say this could be done better? Of course. Capturing racing is really, really difficult, and I don’t think anyone’s been able to really capture it in a way that brings the adrenaline you have as a racing driver. But I think it’s one of the best they’ve done.”
