I’m not sure why this surprises anyone. Labour have morphed over 30 years from a party of working people to thr party of corporate and globalist interests. We the voters must own nothing and be happy
This is Matthew Pennycook’s last-minute application to keep his job as Housing Minister under the next PM.
All we’ve had from him is foot-dragging, excuses and watered-down reforms.
Andy will need an insurgent willing to take on the rentier interests, not be swayed by them.
Thank you so much, Karl. Matthew Pennycook was so promising in opposition, but appears to have been captured by vested interests. Endless whining about complexity, rowing back on the promised Law Commission reforms, and constant foot-dragging. Andy Burnham must move him on.
@KarlTurnerMP@mtpennycook@Law_Commission@FloEshalomi 💯% this! 👆👆👆 it’s now or never @andyburnham! You repeatedly say “Westminster is broken” and this is a perfect example. The Housing Minster for the last 2yrs has had ZERO positive impact on the lives of leaseholders. It’s been all talk and no change on the ground.
I am not a simpleton. You promised to deliver the remaining @Law_Commission enfranchisement and RTM reforms in the draft Bill. Yet those are missing. They must be added, as @FloEshalomi’s Select Committee is calling for. Ground rents until 2068 not ending leasehold either. It would be a big win for @andyburnham to address this asap and to deal with grounds rents issue in next financial year. Massive help with the cost of living. We can do this. ✊🌹
Labour have betrayed Leaseholders.
Bold and radical actions are needed for Labour to regain Leaseholders votes.
What has been proposed in the King’s speech does not meet Leaseholders expectations and betrays the 2024 General Election Labour manifesto commitment to abolish Leasehold.
Ground Rent must be Peppercorn.
The Law Commission’s reform proposals must be enacted in full
Extortionate Service Charges are causing the Health (including Mental Well Being) and Finances of Leaseholders to continuously suffer.
How many more suicides and bankruptcies must happen before the Government rectify this national scandal.
Leaseholders will now look at other parties who will support Leaseholders and not corporations.
Thanks for this!
The Starmer government has surrendered to the freeholder lobby, protecting money-for-nothing ground rents until 2068, despite Labour’s manifesto promise to end leasehold.
@andyburnham must change tack and put people before the leasehold mafia.
How often do we see capitalists threatening to quit if they don’t get what they want - it’s a bit sick in my view - mega rich people with their avarice on full display. They need rules that allow them to fleece the common person, that’s how they make their fortunes. We need a government that intervenes. Free Markets are an oxymoron, these people show that again here - rules dominate and we need to change the rules, because too many of them perpetuate corporate rip offs.
@SteveReedMP Hope @andyburnham appoints someone to housing who is serious about keeping promises made pre-election to Leaseholders & can address the plight of millions of us stuck in unsafe flats with extortionate costs. Not make us wait 38 years to free us. @HarryScoffin@EOCS_Official
@riversorare@redrumlisa We have more long term empty homes than ever.
40% of leasehold flats now cannot be mortgaged or sold. The market has stagnated and high risk of a crash because of leasehold.
Building more does not fix that.
@SteveReedMP Two years ago, I voted for you to abolish leasehold.
I wish I hadn't. I wish I'd cut my losses and moved out.
Devastated to still be trapped here, 6 years on from the law commission's recommendation. The cost to extend our lease escalating beyond reach.
You're ruining lives!
@SteveReedMP The government of this country should be above petty squabbles on social media.
2 years in and leaseholders are beyond desperate. How about you get on with what we voted for?
