And another piece of the puzzle drops into place. The FBI, along with British and Dutch intelligence, has now exposed CHOSEN BRICK, spyware attributed to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security. It can capture screens, activate microphones, steal communications and browser data, download additional malware, and support intelligence collection against specifically selected targets. To be clear, the advisory does not say AI was used to develop or operate this malware, and I will not make a connection the evidence doesn’t support.

What concerns me is the architecture developing around it. Last week Anthropic disclosed Iranian actors using AI for identity profiling, intelligence collection, surveillance, malware development, and reconnaissance and targeting work involving U.S. naval forces. Now Western intelligence agencies are independently exposing an operational Iranian state apparatus built around reconnaissance, tailored social engineering, surveillance, collection, and exploitation. We cannot say those systems are connected. We can say the missions increasingly overlap.

This is precisely what I have been writing about. AI did not invent espionage, targeting, cyberwarfare, propaganda, or surveillance. It compresses the manpower, expertise, and time required to conduct them.

Stop looking for the scary new AI weapon. Look at what happens when AI begins connecting and accelerating capabilities our adversaries already possess.

In recent days there has obviously been an aggressive, coordinated information campaign to move AI technologies under the regulatory yoke of the US federal government.

When I spot such obvious information warfare tactics, it concerns me.

So I wrote this article as a primer on the arguments for and against heavy regulation of AI.
