Back in 2004, Hugo Chávez appeared to be heading toward defeat in a recall referendum. Polls showed him in serious trouble. His intelligence service reportedly came to him with a blunt warning:

“Hey dude, you’re going to lose.”

Fidel Castro, who treated Chávez like a son and sent a plane with instructions to Caracas every single day, wasn’t about to let that happen. Cuba’s economy depended on Venezuela’s oil.

Then came the proposed solution:

“There’s new technology… voting machine software. Install it and we can switch votes. We guarantee you win.”

Chávez: “I’m all in.”

They brought in three elite engineers from Simón Bolívar University (often described as Venezuela’s MIT). These engineers already had a technology company in Boca Raton working on touchscreen banking systems.

Venezuela didn’t even have dedicated voting machines at the time, so the software was allegedly installed on Olivetti touchscreen lottery terminals found throughout the country. And according to the account, it worked.

Chávez “won” the referendum he was expected to lose.

Fidel was thrilled. Chávez was thrilled. The engineers reportedly received an additional $200,000 and were told:

“Perfect this system. Get real voting machines. We’ll use it in Venezuela forever… and let’s export it to other countries.”

And according to the story, that’s exactly what followed.

Soon after, unexpected leftist victories began appearing across Latin America — Ortega in Nicaragua, Correa in Ecuador, and the Kirchners in Argentina.

Fidel Castro had spent decades trying to spread revolution through guerrilla warfare. According to this account, he may have found a far more effective tool: software, touchscreens, and digital votes.
