Children with motor impairments are often excluded from video games that could otherwise support engagement, learning, and rehabilitation.

Responding to this accessibility barrier, researchers developed Playcuff, a wearable device that functions as both a video game controller and an orthotic aid to enhance upper-limb control. Using data from two inertial sensors, an embedded machine learning classifier identified 22 forearm and wrist movements in real time with over 94% accuracy. In testing with 19 children with neuromotor impairment, user feedback was strongly positive, and the system proved effective for intuitive game control.

By merging assistive technology with interactive play, this approach could expand access while supporting more engaging and functionally meaningful rehabilitation.
