Another vivid display of the Potemkin Party's incorrigible preference for optics, political duplicity, and hollow posturing instead of substance. Let us revert to the fundamentals:

1. The Five-Point Peace Agreement - Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia - that was signed in Asmara on July 9, 2018, was anchored on cardinal pillars of international law; i.e. full respect of each-others sovereignty and territorial integrity.
2. Indeed, Article 1. of the Agreement explicitly heralds the "end of the state of war between Ethiopia and Eritrea and the ushering in of "a new era of peace and friendship". Articles 4 & 5 announce the "full implementation" of the EEBC Award; and, the "joint endeavor of both countries to ensure regional peace, development and cooperation", respectively.
3. This Agreement occurred 18 years after the "final and binding" EEBC Arbitral Award that was rendered in April 2002. The state of continued hostility that prevailed between the two countries stemmed from the willful decision of the incumbent Ethiopia regimes not to abide by the international agreements they had signed as well as the failure of the relevant international powers/guarantors to take punitive measures against the recalcitrant party.
4. But the positive and sensible stance that the new Ethiopian government took, even if belatedly, in 2018 was sadly and suddenly reversed in December 2023 when it reverted to a more virulent variant of the expansionist and irredentist agendas of its predecessors; dashing the optimism and euphoria that the 2018 Peace Agreement had engendered for a new chapter of enduring regional stability and cooperation between the two neighbouring peoples and countries.
5. The Potemkin Party went beyond illicit claims of "sovereign access to the sea.. and reclaiming by force the stolen port of Assab", to desecrate and "delegitimize" Eritrea's inalienable and hard-won independence, publicly setting its mission as "the correction of the historical event that transpired in 1991 - i.e. Eritrea's independence". The daily barrage of media campaigns to whip up "national sentiment"; the provocative saber-rattling have been, and remain, intensive and boundless to this day.
6. As we have emphasized repeatedly, the incubator and epicenter of the unnecessary and avoidable tension; the party that is bracing for renewed conflict is the Potemkin Party alone. In the event, the panacea or antidote for the looming crisis is crystal clear: adherence to fundamental pillars of international law in good-faith and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of thy neighbour! Potemkin Party's declared "war manifesto" seems to be morphing - through constant packaging and re-packaging - into "the aggrieved party" mode these days.

Indeed, the incessant and toxic mantra on "acquiring sovereign access to the sea by force if necessary .. the imperative to project naval power in the Red Sea.. the revisionist and blasphemous pronouncements on Eritrea's independence...etc. " that the war-mongering PP has been floating for the last two years has been temporarily turned on "mute-mode" in the past few weeks.

The transparent ploy is designed to hoodwink public opinion by rationalizing the unprovoked and reckless war that the PP has been itching to unleash against Eritrea for the past two years as a "legitimate act of self defense".

This is the gist of the long and monotonous diatribe that PP's Foreign Minister delivered at a "Foreign Policy Forum" in Addis Ababa on Thursday this week whose central theme was on "Eritrea's perennial acts of destabilization against Ethiopia".

Strange as it may sound, PP's senior officials seem to suffer from acute deficits of institutional memory - they claim they are not able "to retrieve them from Cabinet, Parliamentary and other archives". In the event and to refresh the memories of the FM and his Potemkin Party colleagues in a broad-brash and snapshot manner, we will dwell on the following indelible historical facts:

1. Eritrea's three decades war of national liberation was sparked because Ethiopia unilaterally abrogated the sham Federation and annexed Eritrea in flagrant contravention of international law. The Federal Act itself was a blatant violation of Eritrea's inalienable rights of decolonization. Ethiopia's surrogate role in the original illicit act; annexation, and intermittent relapse of its expansionist and irredentist agendas were, and continue to remain, the singular causes of the periodic conflicts that have raged between the two countries.
2. In a nutshell, Eritrea has invariably been on the receiving end for the costly and unnecessary conflicts that successive Ethiopian regime have and continue to unleash because they covet their neighbour's land and endowments.
2. The vicious 1998-2000 border war between the two countries was unleashed by the incumbent Ethiopian regime under the putative pretext of "dispute on Badme and its environs". Although they are singing to a different tune these days, PP's senior officials - including the current Army Chief of Staff - confessed only four years ago that they were ashamed and embarrassed at the time when the Parliament accused Eritrea for aggression and declared war in May 1998 while the army had been given explicit instructions to unleash war weeks earlier. The maximalist agenda of the war went beyond regaining the "disputed territory". In the early weeks of the war, the then Deputy Foreign Minister, Tekeda Alemu, publicly announced to a gathering of the Ethiopian community in Washington that "capturing Assab" was one of the central objectives of the war. During the 3rd Offensive, the Ethiopian regime halted the US-EU facilitated negotiations in Algiers while the Ethiopian army launched a massive military assault on Assab with disastrous consequences. Ethiopia signed the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement only after, and because of, this debacle. The Moratorium on Air Strikes brokered by President Clinton in July 1998; the Technical Arrangements; the Algiers Agreement, and later the EEBC Award were violated by incumbent Ethiopian regimes because they were not sincerely committed to nurturing and consolidating good-neighbourly ties between the two countries on the basis of each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
3. The Potemkin Party is suffering from the same irredentist malaise with its current war agenda cloaked in "sovereign access to the sea". The accusation alluding to Eritrea's visceral stance and "Isaias doctrine" of fomenting perpetual "destabilization" of Ethiopia is too ludicrous to merit elaboration. Small Eritrea must indeed have Providential powers if it is potent enough to destabilize its much larger neighbour for decades. The truth is the wars that are raging in virtually all of Ethiopia's Regions are incubated by the regime's own flawed governance architecture.
4. The FM further digresses to what has become normative among PP officials and trolls these days of disparaging Eritrea's economic endowments and growth as well as its governance architecture. Again, this is too audacious coming as it does from a country whose economy is overstressed and burdened by debilitating poverty in spite of over 84 billion US$ of receiving international development assistance over the last three decades; periodic IMF financial bailouts; and cyclical rounds of intensive care (Food Safety nets etc.). Currently, 21.4 million Ethiopian are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, while 68.7% are multidimentionally poor. And as mentioned above, the country is seething under spiraling conflicts that emanate from misguided governance structures that polarize society along entrenched and centrifugal ethnic cleavages.

We could go on and on.. but it would be meaningless: "ዘረባ ኣደይ ለቱ፥ ኣየውፍር ኣየእቱ"፥ ስለዝኾነ እቲ ነገሩ!

Potemkin Party (PP) senior officials seem to have contracted a severe case of historical amnesia.

In a bizarre and rather amusing announcement to the "House of Representatives" this week, the PP's leader stated that "he had scoured every archive in Addis Abeba - the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet minutes, and parliamentary records - yet found no official record or institutional decision how Ethiopia lost access to the Red Sea".

Hopefully, this debilitating disease is at its incipient or early phase.

* Indeed, only seven years ago, on 9 July 2018 and accompanied by senior officials of his regime including the then Foreign Minister and now Secretary General of IGAD, he had signed in Asmara the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The kernel and cardinal content of this Agreement revolved on the "implementation of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Boundary Commission (EEBC) decision", which affirmed Eritrea's internationally recognized boundary for more than a century in accordance with the Treaties of 1900, 1902 and 1908.

* In another moment of truth in those times, Ethiopia's Army Chief of Staff confessed that "he and his colleagues were embarrassed in May 1998 when the incumbent government publicly accused Eritrea of aggression while it was the Ethiopian army which actually unleashed the war in the first place ". Today, he seems to be infected by this collective amnesia as he tries to justify his incessant saber-rattling and agenda of war on spurious pretexts in contravention of international law and Eritrea's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

*Similarly, another PP General, Bacha Debele, confessed, three years ago, about the disastrous defeat that the Ethiopian army contingent had suffered - in his graphic words "ተጨፈጨፍን/we were completely annihilated " - on the Bure Front when it attempted to occupy Assab in June 2000. Apparently infected by the same historical amnesia, this retired General has joined the chorus to clamour for another cycle of irredentist war of aggression against Eritrea in order to occupy Assab.

The incipient, even if already severe, disease of collective amnesia that has gripped the tight circle of senior Potemkin Party officials will need proper therapy: History 101. Link below is the Introductory Chapter I.

The whole syllabus will of course consist of: the denial of Eritrea's right to decolonization in the 1940s; annexation and the armed struggle; all the way back to medieval and ancient history with objective archeological findings and interpretations.

2nd Letter of Ethiopia's Foreign Minister, (2 October last week), to the UNSG is astounding in its audacity and constitutes an act of duplicity in its extreme!

As the local proverb goes: "ጭጉራፍ'ሲ ሃሪማ ተእዊ!" , which roughly translates into: "A sling emits a shrill cry as it hits its target".

Day-in and day-out for the last two years, the PP's policy mantra has revolved on acquiring "sovereign access to the sea through legal means if possible, and military force if necessary". The intense propaganda campaign aimed at whipping up irredentist ambitions has been accompanied by reckless and provocative saber-rattling.

In the circumstances, the latest letter is a deceitful charade; an insult to the intelligence of the Ethiopian people and the international community at large.

For its part, Eritrea has explicitly stated from the outset, that "it will not, as ever, be drawn into such alleys and platforms" urging all concerned "not to be provoked by these events"; MOI Press Release, 16 October 2023.

In this vein, President Isaias Afwerki further underlined, in his interview with the local press in July last year: "We have no appetite for war... We have no territorial claims or ambitions against our neighbours. But as history attests, we know how to defend our country when and if attacked. The PP is bragging about Drones and long-range missiles, tanks, etc. it has purchased, and the massive wave of attacks that it will unleash against Eritrea. This is mind-boggling and can only be entertained by those who do not know history. Our response is: do not plunge the people of Ethiopia into a futile war: focus on solving your real problems...ዓዲ ወዓሉ! (Stay put)".

As I stated nearly two decades ago, #US-#Eritrea relations were soured by design. The deterioration was not accidental, organic, or the result of misunderstanding, it was deliberate and structured. Washington made conscious policy choices, crafted narratives, and executed geopolitical calculations that systematically undermined Eritrea’s sovereignty and development.

Eritrea|s independent political and economic stance never fit within Washington’s Ethiopia-centered strategy, a reality successive Ethiopian regimes were quick to exploit. U.S. policymakers believed that isolating and weakening Eritrea would somehow elevate Ethiopia’s regional stature and preserve Western influence in the Horn of Africa.

This flawed logic produced the illegal 2009 UN sanctions and the politically motivated 2012 mandate establishing the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea, both engineered by U.S. officials to appease Ethiopia, strangle Eritrea’s economy, and pressure it into compliance. Reinforced by Western-funded #NGO disinformation, these measures distorted Eritrea’s image and impeded its development trajectory.

The 2009 UN sanctions against Eritrea remain one of the most egregious examples of politically driven injustice in recent #UN history, a case still without explanation or accountability. Eritrea was punished not for wrongdoing, but for daring to oppose the U.S. - and Ethiopia-led intervention in Somalia, an operation that unleashed one of the region’s worst humanitarian disasters.

More than fifteen years later, Somalia has yet to recover from the devastation caused by that intervention. No UN Sanctions Committee has ever produced credible evidence to substantiate the fabricated allegations that #Eritrea supported terrorism. Yet the Eritrean people bore the heavy economic and diplomatic costs of this false accusation, a concoction of U.S. and #Ethiopia|n agendas designed to isolate a sovereign nation that refused to submit to external diktats.

For over twelve years, #Eritrea has faced relentless and politically motivated harassment at the @UN @UN_HRC under the guise of the Special Rapporteur’s mandate. This mechanism, born not of genuine concern but of geopolitical calculation, has functioned as an instrument of pressure rather than a vehicle for truth or justice. Year after year, it recycled discredited claims, amplified the voices of politically affiliated activists, and ignored Eritrea’s tangible progress in nation-building and social development.

During this same period, the @UN_HRC and its sponsors turned a blind eye to #Ethiopia|s repeated atrocities, from genocides and ethnic cleansing to mass killings and displacement of its own citizens in #Amhara, #Oromia, #Gambela, #Tigray and the #Ogaden. This glaring selectivity and silence expose the moral bankruptcy of the so-called human rights machinery, which has too often served power, not principle. #Eritrea|s endurance through this institutionalized bias stands as proof of a nation’s steadfastness in the face of orchestrated defamation and coercion.

The credibility of the United States as an honest broker for peace and development in the #Horn of #Africa collapsed with each act of appeasement toward #Ethiopia. Rather than upholding international law and the UN Charter, Washington turned a blind eye as successive Ethiopian regimes committed grave crimes, from genocides and ethnic cleansing to the systematic marginalization of entire communities in #Ethiopia. By shielding and empowering these regimes, the U.S. and its allies not only enabled atrocities but also undermined regional stability and forfeited their own moral authority.

This long-standing indulgence of #Ethiopia, through diplomatic cover, economic and military aid, and willful silence on repeated violations of international law, directly fueled the chaos we witness today. What could have been a relationship grounded in peace, mutual respect, and lawful coexistence was derailed by #Ethiopian expansionism, Western backing, and the deliberate disregard for binding international agreements. The outcome is today’s Prosperity Party regime, unstable, unpredictable, and nearly impossible to engage meaningfully.

The chaos in Ethiopia today is no accident. It is the cumulative result of decades of Western indulgence. Successive U.S. and European administrations prioritized short-term strategic interests over justice, legitimizing successive #Ethiopian regimes that ruled through repression, exclusion, and violence.

The #U.S. and #Europe|an guarantors and witnesses of the Algiers Agreements between Eritrea and Ethiopia also failed to uphold their commitments. Despite the binding decisions of the #Eritrea-#Ethiopia Boundary Commission, #Ethiopia occupied sovereign Eritrean territories for over eighteen years, in blatant disregard of international law.

By refusing to enforce the #EEBC|s rulings, the very powers that brokered peace instead enabled and legitimized aggression, undermining #Eritrea|s sovereignty and sending a clear signal that international agreements could be violated with impunity. This prolonged occupation not only delayed regional stability but further reinforced the pattern of selective accountability that has characterized Western policy toward the #Horn of #Africa.

By turning a blind eye to #Ethiopia|s internal abuses and regional aggression, the international community effectively rewarded impunity. The result is today's #Ethiopia...a nation mired in political instability, ethnic conflict, and humanitarian disaster, where the lives and livelihoods of ordinary #Ethiopians have been sacrificed to sustain the illusion of stability for external powers.

Eritrea approaches its dialogue with #Washington and #Brussels fully aware of this dark history. It expects, and deserves, a long-overdue course correction: a clear, consistent, and principled policy based on respect, not subordination. Above all, #Eritrea|s right to live in peace within its internationally recognized borders, demarcated twice, must no longer be sacrificed at the altar of appeasement and expediency.

The time has come for the United States and its allies to confront the consequences of their own choices. Stability in the #Horn of #Africa will not emerge from indulgence or selective morality, but from fairness, accountability, and respect for the sovereignty of all nations, including Eritrea.

Despite decades of bias, sanctions, and isolation, #EritreaAt34 has come full circle. It has endured, and outlasted, the policies designed to weaken it. Through resilience, self-reliance, and principled diplomacy, #Eritrea stands today as a nation that neither yielded to coercion nor compromised its sovereignty for favor.

The same voices that once sought to silence and sideline it now confront a reality they long denied: that #Eritrea|s steadiness, independence, and commitment to regional peace were never the problem, they were, and remain, the foundation for lasting stability in the #Horn of #Africa.

Today H.E. Osman Saleh, Foreign Minister of #Eritrea, met with Massad Fares Boulos, @US_SrAdvisorAF #US Senior Advisor for African Affairs to President Donald J. Trump @POTUS , to discuss avenues for renewed engagement between the two nations.

The high-level meeting, held on the margins of the 80th Session of the @UN general Assembly in New York, reflects a mutual interest in exploring opportunities for partnership. Both sides emphasized the importance of constructive engagement, dialogue, and collaboration on regional stability, security, and economic development.

H.E. Osman Saleh underscored #Eritrea’s readiness to engage in meaningful discussions that respect national sovereignty while exploring areas of common interest, particularly in the Horn
of Africa, the Nile Basin and the Red Sea.

Minister Osman Saleh re-iterated #Eritrea’s commitment to regional peace and sustainable development and welcomed the opportunity to assess potential avenues for cooperation with the #UnitedStates .

Mr. Massad Fares Boulos highlighted the United States’ interest in fostering dialogue and understanding in a region vital to international trade, security, and counterterrorism efforts. This engagement could pave the way for a new chapter in U.S. - Eritrea relations, potentially opening doors for dialogue on trade, investment, infrastructure, transportation, communication and security partnerships, while addressing longstanding concerns in a constructive framework.

PP (aka Potemkin Party) political and military officials are in an overdrive mode these days; enveloped as they are in inordinate fanfares to "normalize" their delusional and reckless pursuit of "securing sovereign access to the sea".

They are even harking back to the dark chapter in the modern history of both countries to allude to, and lionize, the annexation period; unlawful and abominable as this is.

As underlined on various occasions before, this is of course a political blasphemy of the highest order; a red line that should not be contemplated or crossed.

PP is dangling this toxic, adventurist, agenda of war and conflict while presiding over an economy that requires intermittent financial injections from the IMF, the WB, and other assorted multilateral and bilateral "donors". The multiple internal wars that are raging in Ethiopia to exact avoidable losses of precious lives and the destruction of property is another quagmire that warrants judicious resolution for the sake and welfare of the Ethiopian people.

And yet, PP officials and their minions seem to indulge in extensive and elaborate gaslighting - hosting Summits on Climate Change; Afro-Caribbean Cooperation etc. - to deceive and hoodwink their domestic and international constituencies rather than seeking enduring solutions to their domestic woes and contributing to a regional climate of stability and cooperation on the basis of legality and common sense.

On September 30, 1993, 43+years after the #UN unjustly decided #Eritrea to be federated with Ethiopia, President Isaias Afewerki addressed the 48th session of the United Nations General Assembly as the Leader of the Sovereign State of Eritrea.

Some excerpts from the historic Speech;

"I feel special privilege & honor to address the United Nations General Assembly on behalf of a people who struggled for half a century to regain their fundamental human & national rights & who, despite the outright military victory that they won took the unprecedented step of organizing a free & fair referendum, so as to join the community of independent states on the basis of their freely expressed wish & on solid legal grounds."

"As I speak here today, I cannot help but remember the appeals that we sent year in and out to this Assembly & the member countries of the UN, describing the plight of our people and asking for legitimate sympathy, support and recognition."

"We appealed to the UN not only in its capacity as a representative of the International community, but also because of its special responsibility to Eritrea."

"For it was the UN that decided in 1950, at the beginning of the Cold War, to deny the colonized people of Eritrea their right to self-determination, thereby sacrificing their national and human rights on the altar of the strategic interests of the superpowers."

"In passing that resolution, the UN affirmed that it "remained an international instrument" which the GA "could be seized of" at any time. But for the next 41 years, as a brutal war of aggression was conducted against the Eritrean people, initially with the active support of the US & later with a much worse & massive involvement of the Soviet Union & despite the repeated appeals of the Eritrean people, the UN refused to raise its voice in the defense of a people whose future it had unjustly decided & whom it pledged to protect. Not once in 41 years did Eritrea, scene of the longest war in Africa, & victim of some of the grossest violations of human rights, figure in the agenda of UN. This deafening silence pained our people. It also gave a free hand to the aggressors, thereby prolonging our suffering.”

Dear Mr. Secretary General,
I wish to apologize at the outset for compounding your job by sending this second letter in such a short time when you are under pressure and grappling with tasks of enormous importance.
The reasons that have impelled me to do so are the intensive campaigns underway to create obstacles at this decisive juncture when the Eritrean people are preparing to conduct the referendum in order to assert their right to self-determination through a legal and fair process and when the United Nations has signaled its willingness to participate in the undertaking as an observer. In the event, I wish to put on record the following fundamental precepts.
1) We have been working under the presumption, especially so following the visit of the technical team to Eritrea, that the participation of the United Nations in the process is a foregone conclusion.
2) As we have stressed it repeatedly, the assertion of the right of self-determination of the Eritrean people is the sole prerogative of the people concerned and does not fall within the jurisdiction or authority of any other party. And as such, although the changes that occurred in Ethiopia and the formation of the Transitional Government have been positive developments, the right of self-determination of the Eritrean people and its exercise is not predicated on the good will, authority, or permission of the Transitional Government or any other government in Ethiopia. An approach that alludes to, or gives the slightest hint that, the forthcoming referendum or the participation of the United Nations as an observer as stemming from the permission of the Transitional Government of Ethiopia would constitute a grave historical mistake. Because such a course of action would not bring a lasting solution to the conflict, or be tantamount to a resolution that would breed potential tension, instability and war.
3) That elements bent on expansion and war are, and have been, dong their utmost to impede the constructive participation of the united nations, obstruct its adoption of a judicious resolution, and created loopholes that could be exploited in the future is a well-known fact. We abhor war. We are accordingly extremely apprehensive to situations that may potentially lead to war. Under the circumstances, I urge the United Nations to take stock of this situation and not adopt a resolution that carries the seeds of potential conflict, and humbly point out that historical responsibility for such an undesirable outcome would not rest with us.
The right of self-determination of the Eritrean people and its exercise is not predicated on the good will, authority, or permission of the Transitional Government or any other government in Ethiopia.

Addis Ababa 🇪🇹 Capital of the Circus

While the world remains silent, Ethiopia’s rulers stage a grotesque performance. They provoke Eritrea as if threats alone could conquer the Red Sea. A navy without water, admirals without ships, generals without victories, yet they play at being ocean conquerors.

Addis Ababa no longer resembles a seat of power but a circus ring. The leaders appear as clowns: incompetent, noisy, painted with grand promises that wash away in the first rain. Instead of politics they trade in illusions, instead of statecraft they perform circus tricks, stumbling over their own shoelaces.

But clowns in a circus are harmless, clowns in a state are dangerous. They do not juggle with balls but with human lives. They do not drop confetti but bombs. And while they dream of harbors that will never be theirs, the country loses what it truly needs: peace, dignity, and a future.

Almost on a daily basis, we see an upsurge of blatant distortion and revisions of ancient, medieval and modern history of the region; brazen rejection of relevant provisions of international law; and irresponsible recycling of inflammatory propaganda.
