Likely because your conception of "tasteful" is not neutral or objective, but rather shaped by our shared understanding of social class and status. Black attire is more visible and culturally salient in urban, cosmopolitan centers such as New York City, rather than suburban or rural locales. Additionally, it's popularly associated with certain members of the creative class.

Those people wear black partly because the color plays well in gray urban environments and fits in with local scenes, allowing them to look good while signaling belonging and identity. Plus, the history of the color — from its role in mourning wear, judicial robes, formal attire, and motorcycle jackets — makes us associate it with seriousness, power, rebellion, mystery, elegance, authority, discipline, and even seduction.

Thus, your conception of tasteful is shaped by social dynamics, and people wear black because clothing is imbued with cultural meaning shaped by history.
