Tsai Ming-liang is rapidly becoming an all-time favourite director for me and one of the things that strikes me is how little dialogue he uses, esp. in the types of scenes mainstream films over-script, where the actor "has to" explain to the audience what they're doing and why

just watched THE HOLE, which has a lot of scenes of the two protagonists fixing things in their home or attending to everyday survival, sometimes comically or tragically or both, and you get so much detail from body language about their frustrations and it feels SO GOOD

also his use of constant diegetic sound makes me go crazy. I haven't even watched any of his better-known films yet!!! he's so good and interested in things and in spaces and cities and class and labour and infrastructure and pop music aaaaahhhhh
