OTOBONG INIEKE: "After six decades of apparent political independence, Nigeria is still struggling with various factors that prevent it from securing the foundations of nationhood. Admittedly, this is a challenging endeavour regardless of the conditions that surround the construction of a stable country. However, Nigeria’s situation is unique because a confluence of problems converges and manifests as political instability and a deplorable state of national security. While the foundations of these issues can be traced back to the colonisation of Africa by European imperialists, the question remains: how can Nigeria gain real political independence and economic prosperity? There are several answers to the question above, but the purpose of this deep dive analysis is to argue that a thriving and indigenous military industrial complex is necessary for Nigeria to become a truly politically and economically self-reliant entity. This is because a Nigeria with strong national security is a boon to West Africa in particular, and the whole continent in general. Currently, the Nigerian government is overly reliant on imports of ammunition, weapons, and other critical materiel. This means that the country is subject to satisfying the geopolitical interests of the manufacturing or supplying country, and in many situations, this foreign interest is diametrically opposed to the interests of Nigeria’s national security goals."
