Ludwig von Mises sat down in 1920 and published a paper that ended the intellectual case for socialism, even if the socialists took another seven decades to notice.

The argument was precise. Mises showed that without private ownership of the means of production, there are no real prices for capital goods. Without prices, you cannot calculate profit and loss. Without profit and loss, economic planners have no way of knowing whether they are creating value or destroying it. They are flying blind, spending real resources with no feedback mechanism telling them whether the factory, the railway, or the grain depot was worth building. Every allocation becomes a guess dressed up as a decree.

This, he called the Socialist Calculation Problem, and nobody answered it. Oskar Lange tried in 1936, proposing that socialist planners could simulate prices by trial and error. Mises read this and was unimpressed (charitably put). Lange assumed you could reproduce the function of market prices without the institution that generates them: private property, genuine exchange, real skin in the game. You cannot fake the signal and expect accurate information.

The Soviet Union spent seventy years proving Mises right. Chronic shortages, misallocated steel, surplus winter boots in Georgia in July, famine engineered by committees convinced they understood grain supply better than the price system. The USSR collapsed in 1991 under the weight of precisely the inefficiencies Mises predicted in Vienna in 1920.

You are watching this play out again today, every time a government sets energy prices, rent ceilings, or pharmaceutical price caps, and then expresses shock at the resulting shortages. The calculation problem did not expire with the Soviet Union. Bureaucrats who override price signals recreate the same blindness Mises identified. Mises told you exactly what would happen.

Not better detection either. The dermatologist who published the 1,800 per cent rise went out of his way to rule that out, because the death rate was climbing alongside it.

Not a failure to cover up. Sunscreen went from nothing to a global industry across the exact century melanoma exploded.

Not sun exposure. A cancer registry across four Nordic countries and Australia found more melanoma in office workers than in the men who spent their working lives outdoors.

So something changed inside the skin rather than above it.

The omega-6 in American body fat went from 9 per cent in 1959 to 21 per cent by 2008, tracking the soybean oil supply almost exactly. That fat turns over on a half-life of roughly two years, so the skin you burned this summer was built out of the oil in your kitchen two summers ago.

And sunburn is an inflammatory reaction. The fuel for it is the omega-6 sitting in your cell membranes when the light lands.

Which is why four grams of omega-3 a day let volunteers take 36 per cent more UV before they burned, in a double-blind trial. Why fish oil cut the inflammatory signal in irradiated human skin by more than 60 per cent. Why mice fed seed oil burned worse than mice fed omega-3 under the same lamp.

It is also why my inbox fills up every June. People two and three years into carnivore, fair-skinned, no cream, hours outside, telling me they come in pink now instead of scalded. I stopped burning somewhere in year two and assumed I had imagined it. Thousands of people reporting the same change, in the exact direction the mechanism predicts, is not a coincidence. It is data nobody has bothered to collect.

The trial nobody wants to fund is two groups, one lamp, one kitchen running on sunflower oil and one on butter.

Leaving trial court in Mississippi. A US LawShield member produced a firearm to confront a trespasser on his property. Member lives in a rural part of the state and his house is several hundred yards from the nearest road. A white unmarked box truck was parked with the rear of the truck facing one of the garage doors. The member is driving down his gravel driveway and notices the truck, which starts driving towards him. Concerned with the recent series of burglaries in the county, he produces his concealed handgun in a non-threatening manner. When the person driving the truck identifies herself as a contract FedEx driver in an unmarked truck who got lost and drove onto the property, the member apologizes for the confusion and the driver leaves the property. So you can imagine he was surprised when the state brought assault charges against him and refused to make a plea deal. Charges are dismissed, member not guilty.
