Fun thing I've learned about my job is that if I continue a line of inquiry with someone past the 3rd or 4th reasonable question, they'll inevitably remember some semi-serious problem that has been neglected since 2021 or something.

it's important to not dehumanize war criminals. Not because they deserve empathy, but because calling them subhuman and monsters naturalizes their actions and tacitly absolves them of their misdeeds. You have to remember that they are made of the same material as you.
At home in Boston with my family full of Hockey fans watching the conversation drift closer and closer to someone bringing up Heated Rivalry before turning away at the last second. Probably not good for my blood pressure.
