Having already given a platform to CBs such as Adebola Oluwo (Salford FC), Ange Djadja (Braintree Town), Joyskim Dawa (FCSB) and many others, I’d now like to give this opportunity a go and use my experience to help more young and older players develop their game.

Let me tell you guys about how Sadio Mané arrived in France from Senegal, how he broke into Metz Team when most of Metz players went to AFCON.
I’ll also tell you the story of him almost joining Manchester United after Van Gaal called him, how he almost joined Tottenham also under Pochettino, and how Klopp failed to sign him at Dortmund.
Grab your 🍿
Let’s start with the fact that he ran away to Dakar (capital of Senegal) from his village because his mother hated football. He has never traveled out of his village before, and he had to do an 8-hour journey to Dakar at 16, for the first time.
His mother did not support him playing football because there’s been better players than him from their village and none of them made it. They wanted him to go to school.
On the contrary, Mané hated school. After one week of escaping, his family traveled to Dakar to bring him back home🤣
Mané then agreed with his mum & uncle that he’ll agree to go to school for another year but after that, they must let him chase his dreams. He was gonna pursue football by all means. He said something in him was just telling him to “go for it”.
The family finally decided to support him, they took him to an academy, and he went to France in 6 months. WOW. Never underestimate the support of family.
Mané arrived in France in January 2011, he said it was so cold for him that the club had to give him time away during training because he couldn’t cope. He also got a 6-months injury after 2 months of arriving, the challenges he faced at that early stage of arriving in Europe was crazy.
THE AFCON STORY
New season starts in August, he was in the B Team and wasn’t even playing regularly. He told the coach he wants to go on loan in lower leagues to get playing time. They told him to be patient till January.
Mané played 4 games on a bounce for the B team finally, the coach of the senior team lost many players to AFCON, and tbh asked Sadio to train with them, that was how he got into the team and never got out again. In fact, he took the position of the best player and top scorer in the team and when the guy arrived from AFCON, Mané didn’t go back to the bench.
He said he knew it’ll be tough when the guys got back, so he would wake up at 6am and start running, doing personal training till 8am when the team trains together. He wanted to be physically strong, and do more than others, so he could keep his place in the starting XI.
Let’s talk about the influence of Ralf Ragnick at Salzburg. Mané praised the coaching staff there because they helped him technically, he was very raw, physical, street player, but they told him he was tactically deficient. They helped him.
KLOPP
Klopp was in Dortmund monitoring him. Salzburg under Ragnick were already playing the “Ghen Ghen pressing” and Dortmund played similar, Mané fit the profile Klopp wanted, but the deal didn’t materialise. In fact, Mané said he traveled to Dortmund to see Klopp and they only discussed tactics and how they’ll play at Dortmund.
Mané later went to Southampton. When he was gonna leave there, Van Gaal called him, told him his plans but Mané felt he wouldn’t get playing time at United because they had Di Maria, Depay, Rooney, RVP, and Van Gaal wasn’t gonna guarantee his playing time, so he was skeptical about going to United because he wanted to play regularly.
Pochettino also invited him to Spurs, he saw the training facilities and everything, he told Poch & the club to get in touch with him his agents because he was impressed with their project at Spurs.
3 day after, Klopp called him. Firstly, he apologised for the failed transfer to Dortmund, took responsibility and then told Mané that he wants to build a team that nobody will want to play against. Mané was worried because there was Coutinho, Firmino and Sturridge, Klopp told him not to worry, he’ll play every game. That’s how he was convinced to go to Liverpool, and because they’ve had prior tactical discussions.

Tsimikas speaking to @jwhitey98 about Diogo Jota: “When I think about Diogo, it’s always painful. He was a special guy, a very good guy, and we spent a lot of time together. I think it’s the same for everyone who plays with him — we miss him a lot.
“But for me, he was a very important person because we came to Liverpool together, and shared a lot of things together. When we had a night out or had team trips, he was always the one there next to me. We had fun together.
“When it gets hard, I try to keep only the positive things. We have to live life, because that’s the most important gift that God gave us. And although it’s painful in this situation, you have to never stop thinking about him, he is always there for us and in our hearts.”
