My thoughts on Portland Fire Game 1/44:
From the player introductions, to Ashanti’s halftime performance, to the almost 20,000 person roaring crowd…it was a night to remember in Portland.
Alex Sarama has clearly established the team’s identity. High pressure defense + creatively timed traps, ball movement, and lots of threes. The Fire forced two 8 second violations, to which the crowd went insane.
Speaking of the crowd, that was special. Almost 20,000 people for the Fire’s first official sellout. Skylar Diggins even mentioned the Sky’s struggle to hear in the first quarter as she was thoroughly impressed by the crowd. It was one of the loudest crowds I’ve personally ever been a part of.
The game was lost in the rebounding disparity. The Fire were out-rebounded 46-24, it’ll be tough to win most games if that’s a consistent issue. The good news is, despite that, the Fire kept the game close throughout the night, even winning the third quarter 30-18.
Tonight’s MVPs were Sarah Ashlee Barker, Bridget Carleton, and Carla Leite. Overall, a lot of positives and a better first game than I think many expected. Next two games will be vs the New York Liberty…buckle up!
See y’all on Tuesday, go Fire!🫡🔥

Fire fans can take a deep breath. Serah Williams and Jordan Harrison were fan favorites throughout the preseason and sounds like they’re here to stay!🔥
Frieda Bühner, Jordan Harrison, Carla Leite, Nyadiew Puoch, and Serah Williams were all born in 2004 6 months apart. This Portland Fire team may be one of the youngest in #WNBA history. Will be fun to see the development play out!
Serah Williams has 12 points and 8 rebounds and was a +3 tonight in a 10 points loss in her second WNBA game…
Just a reminder that she’s also being coached by Sylvia Fowles, a pretty good mentor.
