🇧🇩🇮🇳💥 A Fiery Exchange in Delhi: President Zia Stands Firm for Bangladesh
When President Ziaur Rahman visited India during the premiership of Morarji Desai, he was accorded a lavish, state-level red carpet reception. At just 41 years of age, President Zia was barely half the age of the seasoned, silver-haired Indian political leadership and bureaucracy he encountered.
At the time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as Foreign Minister, while Jagjivan Ram was India’s Union Minister for Defence — one of the most experienced figures in the Indian government. It is said that some within the Indian establishment were displeased that such a young head of state from a neighbouring country was being granted the highest honours. The Bangladesh–India water-sharing agreement, which was perceived as favourable to Bangladesh, reportedly added to their frustration.
During a state dinner, Defence Minister Ram allegedly broke protocol and asked President Zia, “Have you ever compared India’s population and military strength with that of Bangladesh?”
President Zia calmly replied, “Yes, I have.”
Ram then pressed further: “Did you calculate how long it would take India to invade Bangladesh?”
Despite the confrontational tone, President Zia responded with composure: “Before you occupy Bangladesh, six of your cities would be destroyed by our forces. And do not forget — during the 1965 War, it was our forces who defeated yours.”
The remark stunned the room. Ram reportedly left his seat in anger, whereupon Zia added, “Why not ask which six Indian cities we would turn into hell?”
India’s Foreign Secretary Jagat Singh Mehta and High Commissioner to Bangladesh K. P. S. Menon were said to be shocked by the exchange and informed Prime Minister Desai. What could have escalated into a diplomatic crisis was ultimately diffused.
Later, Prime Minister Desai and Foreign Minister Vajpayee asked President Zia whether he was all right. With characteristic composure, he replied, “Ram was joking with me — and I was joking with him.”
This was Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman — resolute, unflinching, and unwavering in upholding Bangladesh’s honour and dignity.
We expect no less from his son, Tarique Rahman.

Access to American military hardware such as the Black Hawk helicopter and Javelin missile would significantly enhance Bangladesh’s operational flexibility, battlefield effectiveness, and technological capability. These systems would strengthen Bangladesh’s ability to defend its territory, contribute to international peacekeeping missions, and modernise its armed forces in line with Forces Goal 2030.
Bangladesh must maintain a careful strategic balance. While defence cooperation with the United States offers access to advanced technologies and capabilities, Bangladesh should continue its pragmatic approach of diversifying partnerships, including with China. Dhaka must pick and choose what best serves its national interest, strengthens its defence capability, and preserves its strategic autonomy without becoming overly dependent on any single partner.
🇧🇩🇺🇸📜 Trump Urges Bangladesh to Finalise Key Defence Agreements Amid Expanding Strategic Ties
United States President Donald J. Trump has urged Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to sign key defence agreements that would grant the Bangladesh Armed Forces access to advanced American military equipment.
In a letter dated 18 February 2026, Trump congratulated Bangladesh’s new leader and emphasised expanding bilateral cooperation through defence, trade, and aviation. The proposed Agreement of Reciprocal Trade (ART) includes plans for Biman Bangladesh Airlines to procure at least 25 passenger aircraft from Boeing, strengthening both economic and strategic ties.
Trump also pressed Dhaka to finalise the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA) and the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), which would allow Bangladesh to access sophisticated US-origin defence platforms and technologies.
“I hope you will take decisive action to complete the routine defence agreements that would finally give your military access to high-end, American-made equipment — the best in the world!” President Trump wrote.
The move signals a potential shift in Bangladesh’s defence posture and could significantly accelerate military modernisation under Forces Goal 2030.

🇧🇩🇰🇷🚁Bangladesh is moving to significantly strengthen its helicopter capabilities, with the Bangladesh Air Force evaluating the acquisition of 12 advanced helicopters from Korea Aerospace Industries, including the LAH-1 Mirion light armed helicopter and KUH-1 Surion utility helicopter.
The Bangladesh Army is also showing interest in South Korean rotary-wing platforms, as the armed forces seek to replace ageing Russian-origin helicopters that are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.
Beyond improving operational capability, Bangladesh is pursuing transfer-of-technology opportunities to support its growing indigenous defence industry. Local production of helicopter components, maintenance capabilities, and potential munitions integration could form part of future agreements.
This move reflects a broader shift towards Western and Western-linked defence platforms, improving long-term sustainability while reducing exposure to geopolitical supply risks.
South Korea continues to emerge as a key defence partner, offering modern, cost-effective platforms aligned with Bangladesh’s long-term military modernisation goals.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s early engagement with the leadership of the Bangladesh Armed Forces marks an important step in reinforcing civil–military coordination and strategic continuity during a critical phase of national transition.
On 19 February, the Prime Minister held a formal meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Md Nazmul Hassan, and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, alongside Defence Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) AKM Shamsul Islam.
Such early interaction underscores institutional stability, reaffirms constitutional authority, and ensures alignment between political leadership and military command. It also signals continuity in defence modernisation, operational readiness, and Bangladesh’s strategic posture amid evolving regional security dynamics.
Strong, professional civil–military relations remain fundamental to safeguarding sovereignty, strengthening deterrence, and advancing Bangladesh’s long-term defence preparedness.
