The University of Pittsburgh Dept. of Neurological Surgery is thrilled to announce our 2026 residency match class. These five exceptional individuals represent the next generation of neurosurgical leaders, and their passion for advancing the field and delivering outstanding patient care embodies the mission of our program.
Welcome to Pitt Neurosurgery!
This week, our neurosurgical team performed the first-ever case at @UPMC Presbyterian using CONVIVO intraoperative confocal microscopy, visualizing actual tumor cells at the margin of a recurrent brain tumor in real time, right in the OR.
Combined with 5-ALA fluorescence, this handheld confocal microscope allows surgeons to identify residual tumor tissue at the cellular level during resection, helping guide more precise surgical decisions when it matters most.
Led by Costas Hadjipanayis (@hadjiMDPhD), with PGY-3 resident Oliver Tang, MD, and scrub tech Adam Ferrel.
From holographic spine navigation to AI-enhanced tumor detection, the Surreality Lab is redefining what's possible in the operating room.
Co-directed by Edward Andrews, MD, and Jacob Biehl, PhD, this collaboration between the Pitt School of Medicine and Pitt School of Computing and Information is building the OR of the future — and making it accessible worldwide.
