The claim that Sardar Patel was "elected" as Prime Minister is a blatant distortion of history, a lie propagated by the RSS/BJP.

In 1946, what actually occurred was an intra-party nomination for Congress President, not an election for Prime Minister. While Patel had the support of the Pradesh Congress Committees, he voluntarily withdrew his candidacy in favor of Nehru, making Nehru the de facto choice. Nehru then led both the party and later the interim government with Patel's full support.

India’s first general elections took place between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952, well after Patel's death on 15 December 1950. He neither contested nor was "denied" the Prime Ministership. The RSS/BJP narrative deliberately distorts historical events for political gain.

कल लोकतंत्र के मंदिर संसद में प्रधानमंत्री मोदी जी ने ठीक यही आरोप पं नेहरू पर लगाया।

क्या इसमें जरा सी भी सच्चाई है?

कुछ भी सोचने से पहले पं नेहरू का वह भाषण पढ़ और सुन लीजिए। यहीं से मोदी जी कोट कर रहे हैं।

15 अगस्त, 1959 को उन्होंने कहा-

"जब तक हिंदुस्तान के लाखों गांव नहीं जागते, आगे नहीं बढ़ते तो सिर्फ बड़े शहर हिंदुस्तान को नहीं आगे ले जाएंगे। वे बढ़ेंगे अपनी कोशिश से, अपनी हिम्मत से, अपने ऊपर भरोसा करके। हमारे लोग अपने ऊपर भरोसा करना भूलकर समझते हैं कि और लोग मदद करें। मैं चाहता हूं कि लोग बागडोर अपने हाथों में लें।... तरक्की नापने का एक ही गज है कि कैसे हिंदुस्तान के 40 करोड़ आगे बढ़ते हैं... कौम अपनी मेहनत से बढ़ती है। जो मुल्क खुशहाल हैं वे अपनी मेहनत और अक्ल से आगे बढ़े हैं।... हमारे हिंदुस्तान में काफी मेहनत करने की आदत आमतौर से नहीं हुई है... हम भी मेहनत और अक्ल से बढ़ सकते हैं।... इंसान की मेहनत से सारी दुनिया की दौलत पैदा होती है। जमीन पर किसान काम करता है, या कारखाने में कारीगर, उनसे काम चलता है। कुछ बड़े अफसर दफ्तर में बैठकर दौलत पैदा नहीं करते। दौलत मेहनतकश लोगों की मेहनत से पैदा होती है। तो हमें अपनी मेहनत को बढ़ाना है।"

आजादी के बाद हमारे करोड़ों लोगों के सामने पेट भरने की चुनौती थी। अंग्रेजों की गुलामी, लूट और शोषण ने देश को खोखला कर दिया था। अकाल और भुखमरी से लाखों मौतें होती थीं। ऐसे मुल्क का प्रधानमंत्री अपनी जनता से कहे कि हमें अपने पैरों पर खड़ा होना है, जीतोड़ मेहनत करनी है, विकसित मुल्कों का मुकाबला करना है। क्या यह गुनाह है? नये-नये आजाद हुए मुल्क का प्रधानमंत्री अपनी जनता को आत्मनिर्भर बनने के लिए प्रेरित करे तो क्या यह जनता का अपमान है?

देश के पहले प्रधानमंत्री के भाषण की कुछ पंक्तियां लेकर गलत तरीके से पेश करना शर्मनाक तो है ही, इससे ये भी पता चलता है कि हमारे स्वतंत्रता आंदोलन और राष्ट्र निर्माण के ऐतिहासिक संघर्षों के प्रति प्रधानमंत्री मोदी जी, भाजपा और आरएसएस के मन में कितनी कटुता भरी है।

बात सिर्फ इतनी नहीं है कि वो किसी एक लाइन/वक्तव्य/कार्यक्रम/निर्णय को विकृत करके पेश करेंगे और हम उसकी सफाई देंगे। बात ये है कि सत्ता और देश की मीडिया के शीर्ष पर बैठे मोदी जी जब ऐसी हरकत करते हैं - क्या यह उनको, उनके पद की गरिमा को शोभा देता है? या उनसे ये उम्मीद करना बेमानी है?
